Athletico Mineiro defender Nicolas Otamendi has been dropped to make way for Premier League champion’s centre back. Otamendi represented the South American giants in the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa and despite being recently called up by head coach Alejandro Sabella, he will not be featuring in this year’s competition.
Sunderland midfielder Sebastian Larsson has penned a new contract that will keep him at the Stadium of Light until 2017. The Swedish international was due to be out of contract at the end of this month but today pledged his future to the club. The 28 year old was strongly linked with a move to Stoke City but has agreed to remain at Sunderland after holding talks with manager Gus Poyet and sporting director Lee Congerton.
Columbia’s talismanic striker Radamel Falcao will not play in this year’s World Cup after losing his battle with fitness. Falcao has been out of action since January after picking up a serious knee injury with his club AS Monaco. The diminutive forward was unable to recover in time for the world’s biggest football tournament and he was subsequently left out of the 23 man squad named by national coach Jose Pekerman yesterday.
Roy Keane has rejected the chance to take over as Celtic manager. The Republic of Ireland assistant manager was the odds on favourite to be Neil Lennon’s successor but the FAI have confirmed that the Scottish champions’ talks with Keane have ceased and he will remain with his national side.
