Tipperary’s 33-year-old stalwart forward Brian Fox has called time on his inter-county career after 14 years with the Premier County

The Eire Óg Annacarty Donohill player has finally parted ways with the county team since his debut in 2009. The highlight of his long career came during the Covid-19 lockdown as he won the Munster SFC final in 2020.

Fox was part of the team that won Tipperary’s first provincial title in 85 years on the weekend of the centenary of Bloody Sunday. That was the forward’s sixth attempt at the Munster title after making it to the crowning game at minor, U21, and senior levels.

Tipperary manager David Power has paid a tribute to Fox after his retirement.

“Brian Fox has been a great servant to Tipperary Football, he has represented the blue and gold with great distinction over the years, he will be a massive loss to the senior panel not only for his leadership on and off the pitch, but he was superb with all the new players that came into the panel, he was always there to help.

“On a personal note, I will never forget his face of pure emotion and joy when that final whistle was blown down in Cork last year, and thank him for all the great memories, he was part of over the last ten years.”

Brian Fox also released a statement through the Tipperary County Board. He described is time with the team as an honour and a privilage.

Brian Fox’s statement

“Firstly, I would like to thank all the Tipperary players I’ve shared a dressing room with. The great memories and friendships will always be prized more than any silverware won. I am also very grateful to the various managers and their backroom teams who gave me so much advice and encouragement throughout my career.

“To my club, Eire Og Annacarty Donohill, a very special place, thanks to everyone in the club. We are a small but proud club, and I couldn’t have been prouder to have represented you for Tipperary. I look forward to many more years in the blue and white.

“My parents Kevin and Josefa, who instilled a huge love of Gaelic games in me and did everything to help me try and realise my dream of playing for Tipperary. My siblings Fiona, Karen and Kev, who in no small way helped me develop my competitive nature! And to all my extended family and friends who have travelled everywhere in convoy to support me and made those memorable moments all that bit more special. Thank you.

“I am very fortunate to have had the support of my wife Siobhan throughout the course of my career. She has seen all the highs and lows and often been the sympathetic ear after a tough loss, but that has just made the good days that bit sweeter. Last year’s Munster final victory was obviously the highlight of my career, but getting to share it with her and our two children, Tadhg and Lily, made it all the more magical.

“Finally, I want to wish David and the lads all the best for the year ahead. I look forward to watching and roaring you on from the stands for what I’m sure will be many more great days. Tipp Abu”.

The Tipperary championship has reached the business end of the season as only the four best teams are left standing in the SHC semi-final

The Tipperary GAA council announced the SHC semi-final draw yesterday. This has led to some interesting fixtures having been set up for the next few weeks.

There will be a repeat of the 2016 senior final as Kiladangan takes on the legendary Thurles Sarsfields. Thurles is now hoping to end their drought of four years without a senior title.

The other semi-final is made up of the 2019 champions Borrisoleigh and last year’s runners-up Loughmore Castleiney.

The Senior ‘B’ championship has also reached the semi-final stages. Two south teams in St Mary’s of Clonmel and Killenaule meet in the first game. The other match will see Cashel King Cormacs take on Templederry Kenyons.

Lastly, the intermediate championship is down to four teams as well. Moneygall will take on Kilsheelan-Kilcash while Moyne-Templetuohy will challenge Knockavilla-Donaskeigh.

All semi-final fixtures will be played the weekend of 19th-31st October.

The Galway senior footballers have brought Cian O’Neill on board as a coach ahead of the 2022 season.

O’Neill joins Padraic Joyce’s Galway backroom after leaving the Cork senior football setup following the end of the 2021 season.

The upcoming season will be Joyce’s third in charge and the team will aim to go one further than the final of the Connacht Senior Football Championship.

They will also hope to return to Division One of the National Football League at the first time of asking.

A statement read: “Galway GAA is delighted to announce the appointment of Cian O’Neill to the Galway senior football backroom team.

“The Kildare man will join Pádraic Joyce next season as a coach.”

The Kildare native left the Cork setup after their Munster Senior Football Championship final collapse led to the departure of manager Ronan McCarthy.

He had previously been in charge of his home county’s senior footballers from 2015 until 2019.

It was a period that saw the Lilywhites reach the Leinster Senior Football Championship final in 2017 and knock All-Ireland finalists Mayo out of the Championship the next year in the ‘Newbridge or Nowhere’ game.

O’Neill made a name for himself as a trainer on Liam Sheedy’s backroom in the manager’s first stint with the Tipperary hurlers.

He was involved with the Kerry senior footballers as part of Eamonn Fitzmaurice’s backroom and has also worked with the Limerick and Mayo footballers.

The Tipperary SHC and Seamus O’Riain tournament moves into the quarter-final stages this weekend as the competition heats up

There has already been some drama and entertainment in the Tipperary SHC this year.

Senior ‘A’ titleholders Kiladangan look like a strong side again this year. They finished at the top of their group but left it till the end to win each of their three games against Loughmore Castleieney, JK Brackens, and Moycarkey-Borris.

Loughmore comfortably dispatched Killenaule last week in a play-off decider to make it this far. They have now been rewarded with having to face another one of the county’s favorites in Kilruane MacDonaghs at the weekend.

The top guns of the competition will still be Thurles Sarsfields as they look to reclaim the title. After breezing past their group opponents, they will now play Clonoulty/Rossmore.

Elsewhere, the Seamus O’Riain competition has seen some stand-out performances by some of the county’s ‘B’ teams. A Lar Corbett driven Thurles is turning heads as they face St Mary’s this weekend.

The other ‘B’ team, Kiladangan will have a much tougher task as they challenge the favorites Killenaule on Saturday.

All-Ireland champions Limerick have a full set of 15 players included as nine different counties are represented in the hurling nominations for the 2021 PwC All-Stars announced today (Thursday).

After a summer that saw the Treaty County sweep all before them to retain the Liam MacCarthy Cup, John Kiely’s outstanding champions bring that dominance to the final list of 45 nominations.

Also announced today are the players who have been shortlisted for the PwC GAA/GPA Hurler of the Year Award with Limerick again setting the standard.

Seán Finn, Kyle Hayes and Cian Lynch will be voted on by their peers for the overall award.

The vote for the PwC GAA/GPA Young Hurler of the Year Award will be contested between Kilkenny’s Eoin Cody, Cork’s Shane Barrett and Clare’s Aidan McCarthy.

Nickie Quaid, Eoin Murphy and Patrick Collins form a high calibre trio contesting the goalkeeping award.

In defence, the 18 nominees are from Limerick, Cork, Waterford, Kilkenny, Tipperary and Clare.

The six midfield nominees include the high scoring Laois player Paddy Purcell. Dublin wing forward and captain Danny Sutcliffe and Wexford captain Lee Chin are their counties sole representatives in a star-studded list of 18 attackers who will be cut to six for the final 15.

The full county breakdown for the hurling nominations is Limerick 15, Cork nine, Waterford seven, Kilkenny five, three each for Clare and Tipperary and one each for Dublin, Laois and Wexford.

Congratulating the nominees, Uachtarán CLG Larry McCarthy said: “I want to congratulate all of those who have been chosen among this distinguished list of nominees for the PwC All-Stars.

“To be recognised and shortlisted as being among the cream of the crop from what was yet another thrilling hurling summer is a significant achievement for all the players, and is shared by their families, clubs and the communities they represent.

“I also congratulate the contenders announced for the PwC Hurler of the Year and the PwC Young Hurler of the Year.

“Since 1971 the All-Stars has been synonymous with excellence. Our thanks to PwC for their continuing support of this wonderful scheme.”

Feargal O’Rourke, Managing Partner, PwC, said: “For the last 50 years the All-Star Awards have marked competitiveness and success on the pitch, but also preparation, bravery and sacrifice away from it.

“On behalf of everyone at PwC, sincere congratulations to each of the 45 hurlers nominated for the 2021 PwC All-Stars.

“Despite the ongoing challenges in 2021, their outstanding individual performances throughout the season have entertained and captivated us all.

“These nominations recognise their outstanding dedication and are hugely deserved.”

Tom Parsons, Chief Executive of the GPA, said: “To be nominated for a PwC All-Star is special and congratulations to the 45 players who have had their individual performances recognised by the selection committee to whom I also want to say thanks.

“Heartiest congratulations too, to the nominees for the PwC Hurler of the Year and the PwC Young Hurler of the Year.

“To be on those shortlists given the many outstanding performances in 2021 is a great achievement in itself.

“I also want to take the time to recognise all inter-county players, male and female, who provided us with much-needed entertainment against the backdrop of the pandemic this year.

“What you have done for the morale of the country should not be underestimated.  Thank you.”

The nominations were chosen by a panel of Gaelic Games correspondents from across, print, radio, TV and digital media, chaired by Uachtarán CLG Larry McCarthy.

The PwC All-Star nominations in football will be released tomorrow.  The presentation of the PwC All-Star awards will take place on December 10 in a televised ceremony that will be in line with Covid-19 restrictions and will be confirmed in due course.

Peter Creedon has been appointed the new senior football manager of the Tipperary Ladies following his ratification at the October County Board meeting on Monday night last October 4th.

Creedon succeeds Declan Carr in the role, who stepped down last month after his side survived relegation to the All-Ireland Intermediate Championship this year.

Tipperary lost their relegation semi-final to Kerry after a poor group stage in the All-Ireland Senior Championship but a seven-goal showing against Tyrone in Kinnegad sealed their senior status for 2022.

Creedon had previously been in charge of the county’s men’s senior football team from 2012 to 2015 and was also the manager of Laois in 2017.

The Roscraberry native was involved with the Tipperary minor and U21 football teams before taking the reins at a senior side.

Creedon managed the two sides for five years from 2003-2008 and has also been the head coach at clubs Cahir and Roscraberry.

He has also been involved with the Tipperary Ladies Football County Underage teams over the last number of years.

Currently principal of Colaiste Dun Iascaigh in Cahir, Peter Creedon has also served as principal of St. Ailbe’s in Tipperary town.

Speaking after his ratification on Monday evening last, he said he felt it was an honour and privilege to manage the team and he is looking forward to the challenge ahead.

In an exclusive interview with CK Streaming moments after his appointment was formalised, school principal Creedon said: “I suppose it’s something that, at the start of the year, I wouldn’t have expected to be doing, but when I was asked to consider it and put my thoughts around it, it looked like something that could be a very exciting project.

“Look, it was great to have had the honour of managing the Tipp senior men’s [team] for four or five years and if I’ve half as good a time with the girls as I had with the boys, it’ll be great.”

The most recent weekend of the Tipperary Club Championship saw three of the 2001 All-Ireland champions still togging out for their local team

Twenty years ago, the Premier County had a famous victory against Galway in Croke Park in the Guinness All-Ireland Senior hurling final. Captain Tommy Dunne lifted the Liam McCarthy in front of a large, loud blue crowd.

The team that lined out that day, more than two decades ago was:

Brendan Cummins; Thomas Costello, Philip Maher, Paul Ormonde; Éamonn Corcoran, David Kennedy, Paul Kelly; Eddie Enright, Tommy Dunne (c); Mark O’Leary, John Carroll, Eoin Kelly; Eugene O’Neill, Declan Ryan, Lar Corbett.

Of that legendary team, it might amaze many to find out that three of those players continue to play hurling for their clubs to this day.

Goalkeeper Brendan Cummins lined out for Ballybacongrange, wing forward Eoin Kelly started for Mullinahone, and corner forward Lar Corbett came on for Thurles Sarsfields.

Cummins, who the 2 Johnnies said that “NASA has studied his puck-out range,” played in goals for intermediate side Ballybacon-Grange against Moneygall.

Sadly for him and his team lost the match 1-21 to 2-09 and will now go into the Relegation Playoff semifinal against Arravale Rovers next week. The 46-year-old still continues to be a big part of his club as they fight for survival.

Eoin Kelly had a bit more luck as Mullinahone faced Toomevara in the Senior Championship. He started in corner forward and took most of the team’s frees as they won 2-23 to 1-13.

His nine points at the age of 39 ensured the club’s top place finish in their group. They will now go into next week’s knockout games as top-seeded.

Lastly, Lar Corbett one of Tipperary’s most skillful hurlers that happened to own a famous pub in Thurles. He was part of the squad that lost out to Burgess on Sunday 0-17 to 0-12.

Wearing number 20 he came on in a tough game for Thurles Sarsfield’s Senior ‘B’ team. The 40-year-old managed to score some frees for the side and will continue to play in the Seamus O’Riain Cup as they topped their group.

Although these three players have a lot of experience under their belts, they are still setting a standard for Tipperary hurling. With more than six All-Ireland gold medals between them, they surely have enough quality to play a few more years.

The Tipperary Club Camogie championship has begun and nine teams are battling to be called queens of the county

The nine teams have been split into two groups with the best two teams going into the knockout rounds and the bottom club going into a relegation playoff.

This county championship will certainly attract the eyes of many Gaelic games enthusiasts across the county and throughout the country.

It will serve as a marker of current standards within the county and given that the Tipperary senior team seems to be getting better and better, gaining ground on the top-three every year, the contest at club-level should be quality entertainment.

Drom & Inch come into this year’s competition as reigning champions and heavy favorites to lift the trophy again.

An underdog to root for in this championship would be Cashel who keeps improving each year and are hungry for some silverware.

With the eyes of Tipperary and the county senior management watching, it will be interesting what players emerge as real powers.

Group 1: Thurles Sarsfield, Clonoulty/Rossmore, Annacarty, Drom & Inch, Toomevara

Group 2: Silvermines, Nenagh, Cashel, Burgess/Duharra

Round 1

Thurles Sarsfield (4-12) v Annacarty (0-10)

Clonoulty (0-10) v Drom & Inch (1-15)

Brendan Cummins has been announced by Tipperary GAA as the new U20 hurling manager for the inter-county side on a three-year term.

The inter-county legend brings with him a wealth of experience, including 18 years with the Tipperary senior hurlers as a player.

The 46-year-old is a five-time Munster champion and a two-time All-Ireland champion at senior level – he also won an All-Ireland winners medal with the U21s and Munster championships at both minor and U21 level as a player.

When Cummins ended his playing career, he had racked up 73 appearances in the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship across 19 seasons – a record that was only bettered by Kilkenny legend Michael ‘Brick’ Walsh in 2019.

Cummins will be joined by former Kerry senior hurling manager Fintan O’Connor who will form part of his backroom as a coach and has also signed a three-year contract.

The pair previously worked together when O’Connor was contracted to the Kerry senior hurlers – Cummins was part of his backroom.

Cummins was Kerry’s goalkeeping coach for six years from 2014-2020 and the U20 job in his native county is his first managerial position.

Cummins replaces John Devane in the role after he spent two years with the Premier County, who could not get his side past a strong Cork U20 side as they lost out to the champions-elect at both the semi-final and final stages of the U20 Munster Championship.

The former Tipperary goalkeeper will aim to develop the players that come through from minor level into athletes good enough for the top level of hurling.

Tipperary GAA have announced that they have appointed Colm Bonnar as the senior hurling manager on a three-year contract.

Bonnar previously coached the Carlow senior hurlers for a three-year period in which he brought the side up to Division One of the National Hurling League and the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship.

Under his management, Carlow won the Christy Ring Cup and the Joe McDonagh Cup in two consecutive years to reach the top of the inter-county hurling pyramid.

The Cashel King Cormacs club man has also managed the Tipperary camogie side – with whom he won an All-Ireland in 1999 – the Wexford senior hurlers and Waterford Institute of Technology.

All three jobs have seen Bonnar help the sides to silverware during his tenures and the 57-year-old has also had various backroom roles with other inter-county sides since getting into coaching.

The former Tipperary hurler is currently working with Kilkenny club Dicksboro alongside ex-Waterford boss Padraig Fanning.

Upon taking up the role as manager of the Tipperary senior hurlers, Bonnar is replacing former head coach Liam Sheedy, who brought All-Ireland success to the Premier County in both his tenures.

Bonnar relishes the opportunity to take on “his biggest, but proudest challenge” as Tipperary Hurling Manager.

“I realise that one of the most successful Tipperary teams ever is obviously coming to a natural transition with the departure of Liam Sheedy and the recent retirement of Brendan Maher and I would like to congratulate them on their amazing careers for Tipperary,” Bonnar said.

“However, I am confident with the experience still in the current squad and the many successful U20/21 and minor teams over the last number of years, there are many talented hurlers in Tipperary bursting to take their opportunity to be successful at senior level, just like I am as the new manager.”
