Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has given his say on some controversial decisions that went the way of the home side in the Redmens’ defeat to West Ham United on Sunday.

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Divock Origi found the net for Liverpool but a freak goal from a corner – down as an Alisson Becker own-goal, a Pablo Fornals finish and a Kurt Zouma header brought an end to their 25-game win streak.

The defeat in London was Liverpool’s first of the season in all competitions and ended the streak that started in April.

Liverpool’s last defeat came at the hands of Real Madrid in last season’s UEFA Champions League quarter-final.

Jurgen Klopp spoke about some of Craig Pawson’s decisions in the game after his side’s defeat.

“Yeah, that’s why I spoke now first about the game independent of these situations,” Klopp said. “So, we lost that game. But I think it’s a clear foul on Alisson, how can it not be? The arm from Ogbonna is there.

“I really don’t know who was VAR today. You always have to say that the ref maybe in the game can’t see that, but in the situation when you see how the dynamic of the whole situation when they all go down, how close they are, they are like in each other.

“How can that not be a foul already, without pushing the arm of Alisson away? But the ref made it easy for himself and thought, come on, let’s see what the VAR is saying.

“The VAR had a look and said not clear and obvious, I don’t know why. And here’s the goal, which is really strange.

“Then, I saw only the situation with Aaron and Hendo now and the way I saw it now, it’s a clear red card.

“There’s actually no discussion possible and, again, I don’t know how. [He] will probably say because he touched the ball before, but a reckless challenge can touch whatever you want before but you cannot control your leg that much that you don’t hit your opponent high up on the leg – on the chin – you cannot go like this in a challenge.

“We cannot make these decisions obviously and the ref, I don’t know what he would say about that now but in the game, he looked quite confident that his decisions were all right.”

Liverpool travel to London this Sunday to face West Ham United at the London Stadium in their last match before the November international break.

Jurgen Klopp’s team are still unbeaten this season after their midweek win over Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League.

Their unbeaten streak started last season and is currently on 25 (18 wins, seven draws) – their joint-longest run since joining the football league and their best run since 1982.

However, they face an in-form West Ham side who have a six-game unbeaten streak of their own, including five wins before Thursday night’s draw with Genk.

Liverpool will be without Roberto Firmino, Joe Gomez and Curtis Jones when they make the trip to the English capital this weekend.

Firmino has been sidelined with a serious hamstring injury after being substituted on and off against Atletico on Wednesday night.

Gomez will be absent due to a calf injury while Curtis Jones will continue to recover from an eye injury in training.

However, Fabinho and Thiago Alcantara are set to be in contention for the side’s visit to London after both made their returns from injury against Atletico.

Fabinho started the 2-0 win over the Spanish champions and Thiago replaced him on the hour mark.

Hammers forwards Andriy Yarmolenko and Nikola Vlasic will be monitored ahead of Sunday’s match as Moyes said that they were minding injuries before the side went to Belgium.

Both sides are still expected to be able to field strong sides.

Teams

West Ham United (4-2-3-1) – Predicted: Areola; Coufal, Zouma, Ogbonna, Cresswell; Rice, Soucek; Bowen, Fornals, Benrahma; Antonio.

Liverpool (4-3-3) – Predicted: Alisson; Trent, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson; Fabinho, Henderson, Oxlade-Chamberlain; Salah, Jota, Mané.

Odds

West Ham United 15/4

Draw 14/5

Liverpool 4/6

Where To Watch

The match will kick-off at 4:30 pm and will be available to watch live on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Football.

Liverpool men’s manager Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that the team’s number nine Roberto Firmino has been sidelined with a “serious hamstring injury” in the latest injury update.

The Brazilian replaced Sadio Mané at half-time in the midweek win over Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League but was substituted himself after picking up the issue.

Firmino has been in form so far this season, with his work-rate once again a standout of his overall game.

Klopp told Liverpoolfc.com on Friday: “Bobby is not good news with a serious hamstring injury, really unfortunate. We don’t know exactly how long he will be out but it will be not now after the international break directly. We have to work on that.”

Firmino’s Liverpool teammates, centre-back Joe Gomez and midfielder Curtis Jones will also miss the side’s upcoming clash with David Moyes’ West Ham United.

Gomez will be absent due to a calf injury while Curtis Jones will continue to recover from an eye injury in training.

“Curtis is a completely different story [to Firmino], he was very unlucky in training – he got a finger that scratched the eye.

“I had a lot of injuries to players in my career, that was not involved. He is on the way back but we have to see how long exactly.

“He will be back after the international break, for sure, but in the international break, we have to see when he can start doing proper stuff again.

“And Joey, hopefully after the international break as well.”

However, Fabinho and Thiago Alcantara are set to be in contention for this weekend’s visit to London after both made their returns from injury against Atletico.

“Very important, you see that. Fab was clear – he was not that long out – that he can maybe go, how we decided then 60 minutes,” Klopp stated.

“And swapping that with Thiago was probably exactly the right thing to do, now they should be both a big step ahead, so all good.”

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has vowed that his side “will be back” after their fourth-round exit from this year’s Carabao Cup.

The holders were beaten 5-3 on penalties by West Ham United after an inspired Alphonse Areola kept them at bay.

Phil Foden and missed their penalties, which allowed Said Benrahma to score the winning spot kick and take David Moyes’ men into the next round.

The loss means that City’s five-year run without a defeat in the competition, as well as their streak of four Carabao Cups in a row, has come to an end.

“An incredible run has finished [but] we finished in a good way,” said the City boss.

“We played in a really good way, creating chances against a team who defended deep.

“On penalties, they were better. Congratulations to West Ham. Next year we will be back.”

City have dominated the competition under Pep Guardiola, beating Arsenal, Chelsea, Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur on the way to each other four they have picked up under the Catalan coach.

Their last loss in the competition came in the 2016-17 season when they were narrowly beaten by rivals and eventual victors Manchester United at Old Trafford.

The Citizens have been lauded for their squad depth throughout their period of dominance in the League Cup as the side have several great players at their disposal in each position.

Their period of dominance led to them joining Liverpool as the record holders of the League Cup with eight each.

Guardiola praised West Ham’s performance in the game and said that they brought out a good performance from his side in return.

“Not just this season, the previous one [too],” Guardiola said of West Ham’s progress under Moyes.

“One of the toughest games we played at home when one side was better than us last season was West Ham.

“They’re doing well in the Premier League and the Europa League and now they are in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.

“Fantastic team, fantastic manager. We knew it. We did our game. I didn’t see the stats, but I thought we did a good game.

“Sometimes it happens. Next season we will be back.”

Leeds United v West Ham United – Preview, Lineups, Betting, TV Coverage

Leeds United and West Ham United will go head-to-head on the Gameweek 5 of the 2021/2022 Premier League season.

This game will be an interesting game for both teams. The last time these two sides met was last March where David Moyes’s side came out 0-2 victors. West Ham also took 6 points from 6 from Leeds Ham in the 2020/2021 season.

Leeds United Retrospective

Leeds last outing in the league was a 1-1 away draw to fellow strugglers Newcastle last week.

Leeds are still without a win this season and are in dire need to pick up some valuable 3 points to avoid being stuck in a relegation fight so early on.

Drawing 3 and losing 2, Bielsa’s side should gain some form eventually if they pull out a big 3 points here.

However, they did pick up a win in the third round of the League Cup on Tuesday, defeating Fulham away from home 5-6 on penalties after a 0-0 draw from 90 minutes.

They currently sit at 17th in the league table.

West Ham United Retrospective

West Ham lost their first game of the season against title challengers Manchester United last weekend in a 1-2 home loss.

They did, however, knock Ole Gunnar Solskjaers side out of the League Cup on Wednesday with a 0-1 away win at Old Trafford.

They currently sit 8th in the table with 8 points. Winning 2, drawing 2 and losing 1.

Date, kick-off time and venue

This game between Leeds United and West Ham United will kick off at 3 pm BST (British Summer Time) on Saturday, September 25, 2021, at Elland Road.

Where to watch Leeds United v West Ham United

The game will not be televised on any UK platform.

Leeds United v West Ham United United team news

Patrick Bamford should be fit enough after picking up an ankle injury in his side’s 1-1 draw to Newcastle.

Luke Ayling picked up a knee injury against Newcastle and his fitness is still up in the air.

While Jack Harrison is out after contracting Covid-19.

In-form striker Michail Antonio is back from suspension after serving his one-game ban against Manchester United after picking up a red card against Southampton.

Leeds United v West Ham United prediction

Leeds look slightly leggy in their last few games, with a 0-3 home loss to Liverpool and then a 1-1 draw away to Newcastle. Bielsa’s side needs a win here so they will be more than up for it.

West Ham will be happy after redeeming their first loss in the league to Manchester United after they knocked them out of the League Cup Wednesday.

It is too close to call, but I expect goals here.

Prediction: Draw 2-2

Leeds United are still on the hunt for their first win of the season as they face West Ham on week six of the Premier League

The match will kick off at 15:00 on Saturday 25th September in Elland Road with Kevin Friend as referee

Leeds finally got a well-needed boost this week in the EFL Cup. After a dreary 0-0 away to Fulham with a heavily rotated squad, they managed to win the penalty shootout after a Meslier save.

Manager Marcelo Bielsa will hope that they inspire his side to claim their first victory in the league. They go into this home game in 17th place after three draws in five matches.

The Whites may be happy but West Ham fans were ecstatic in the Cup. After losing to Manchester United on Sunday in the most dramatic fashion, they returned to Old Trafford three days later and a Lanzini goal won them the tie.

Now a Europa League side, David Moyes will want his team to push on from eighth place in the league after two wins and two draws from the opening five matches.

Leeds United will fear this fixture, in the last four games spanning ten years, West Ham has won two and drawn two. Last season in the Premier League, the Hammers won but fixtures by small margins.

Score Prediction

This is predicted to be a very close fixture, as a battle between two managerial geniuses in Moyes and Bielsa. Even though Leeds will be on the hunt, it is hard to bet against West Ham in the form that they are in.

Expect this game to end at a close 2-1 to the Hammers.

West Ham United Retrospective

In their last game, David Moye’s side was left frustrated with a 0-0 draw away to Southampton. The highlight of the game being Michail Antonio’s sending off in second-half injury time.

Although, they have continued on their hot form with 8 points from 12, remaining unbeaten so far.

Manchester United Retrospective

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is coming off a shock 2-1 loss to Young Boys in their opening group stage game in the Champions League. Leading at half-time, Aaron Wan-Bissaka was deservedly sent off for a potential ankle breaker. They eventually conceded in the final minute of injury time after a Jesse Lingard pass-back.

They come into this match top of the league, with their last match being a 4-1 home win over Newcastle United. With 10 points from 12. Scoring 11 and conceding 3, they look like early title contenders.

Date, kick-off time and venue

This game between West Ham United and Manchester United will kick off at 2 pm BST (British Summer Time) on Sunday, September 19, 2021, at The London Stadium.

Where to watch Manchester United v Newcastle United

The game will be televised on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Premier League.

West Ham United v Manchester United team news

The only injury and suspensions worries for West Ham are Winston Reid’s knee injury, with no return date announced.

In-form striker Michail Antonio will be out due to picking up a red card and will serve his one-game suspension here.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka will be available as his suspension is only for European Football. Edison Cavani is still out but may feature from the bench, Alex Telles is still a week or so out from an ankle injury.

While Scott McTominay will be observed from a hip injury.

West Ham United v Manchester United prediction

It should be a tight and cagey game, with both teams playing well this season, attacking well and defending adequately.

While West Ham is at home and have shown a resilient side to them when playing at The London Stadium, I believe Manchester United will prove too strong here.

Without their main goal threat in Michail Antonio, where will the goals come from? With Ronaldo and Bruno linking up well, they should have too much firepower for West Ham to control.

Prediction: Manchester United 1-3

Leicester City were thrashed 4-1 by West Ham United on Monday night after going down to 10-men in the first half.

Striker Michail Antonio broke the goalscoring record for West Ham with a brace on the night and added an assist in an incredible performance.

Before the game, Antonio sat on 47 goals and had shared the record with club legend Paolo Di Canio.

Leicester winger Ayoze Perez was sent off after a stamp on West Ham attacking midfielder Pablo Fornals in the fortieth minute.

Michael Oliver gave the Leicester player a straight red card after a VAR review on the studs-up challenge.

Brendan Rodgers’ side had already gone behind after Fornals’ strike in the 26th minute found the net.

The Spaniard opened the scoring after combining with Said Benrahma to punish a poor pass from Leicester striker Jamie Vardy.

West Ham started the second half strongly and Antonio capitalised on another poor pass – this time from Caglar Soyuncu – to assist Benrahma who added a second for their side.

Leicester midfielder Youri Tielemans reduced the deficit 13 minutes later and gave his side some hope heading into the final twenty minutes.

However, West Ham pulled away with two goals in a matter of minutes near the end of the game courtesy of Antonio earning the side their second win on the bounce.

Antonio used his strength to hold off Soyuncu and score the record-breaking goal and celebrated with a cardboard cutout of himself.

Four minutes later, the 31-year-old nabbed his second of the game, taking himself one shy of a half-century for the Hammers.

Right-back Vladimir Coufal’s cross found Antonio who moved away from his marker and slotted home to put the icing on the cake.

Antonio’s performance throughout the game earned him a man of the match award and he now sits on 33 goals and assists in his last 43 Premier League starts.

The game leaves Leicester in disarray with only one senior recognised centre-back fit (Caglar Soyuncu) after their new signing Jannik Vestergaard was injured in training.

Leicester will travel to Norwich City for their next game on Saturday, August 28th at 3:00 pm.

Chelsea have an abundance of defensive talents and West Ham United are in need of a new center-back general, step in Kurt Zouma

The French center half has been an unused substitute in Chelsea’s opening two matches against Arsenal and Crystal Palace. Zouma has found appearances hard to come by since Thomas Tuchel replaced Frank Lampard halfway through last season.

He still managed to play 36 times for the Blues in all competitions last year, where they won a Champions League. The defender has been at the club since 2014 but now it might be time for him to move on.

According to Sky Sports, West Ham is nearing a deal with Chelsea for the player. The Blues want around £25 million to sell him which West Ham seems willing to pay.

The problem is if Zouma is willing to move to West Ham after making a home out of Stamford Bridge for seven years. He will need to agree on personal terms before he can sign for the club.

If a deal does not go through then he will happily stay in Chelsea until the end of his contract in 2023.

It appears that Tottenham Hotspur are also interested in signing Zouma. He is still only 26 years old but could bring some energetic experience to the aging Spurs defenders.

After returning from a bad leg injury in 2016, he regained his confidence with loan spells at Stoke City and Everton. Last season he earned his right to be in contention for a starting place at Chelsea again.

Either London club will need to speed up talks with Zouma with only two weeks left in the transfer window. It would be interesting to see the Frenchman given more game time in a different part of England this year.

West Ham United transfer news and rumours:

Who has West Ham United been linked with?

Jesse Lingard

(Sky Sports, August 3): West Ham have admitted that they have a 10 per cent chance of signing Jesse Lingard after his successful loan spell after last season.

Kurt Zouma

Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma is still on top of David Moyes’s wishlist, with talks continuing according to reports from the London Evening Standard. (London Evening Standard, August, 17).

The European champions are said to be willing to offload the French centre-back for a fee set around £25 million,

But the player’s wages are thought to be an issue with Zouma demanding over £100,000-per-week and West Ham may not be willing to meet those demands.

Nikola Milenkovic

23-year-old Fiorentina defender Nikola Milenkovic’s proposed move to The Hammers has broken down; with Tottenham now in discussions for the player.

Moyes and company were confident a deal could get done prior to deadline day, the optimism around the deal came from the player having less than a year left on his current contract and doesn’t want to sign a renewal.

A fee for the player was thought to be around €15-16m (£12-13m) but the London club has walked away from the deal after failing to agree on agent fees (Firenze Viola, August, 16).

James Tarkowski

Burnley centre-back James Tarkowski has been touted as a top priority for David Moyes with the 28-year-old centre-back keen to see out his current contract at Turf Moor and move on a free at the end of the season. (The Boot Room, August 17).

Which players have been linked with a move away?

West Ham United transfer news and rumours:

Declan Rice

The latest from inside Declan Rice’s camp is that he is yet to sign a contract extension with West Ham United.

He is back training and does not want to force a move out of the club that he has been with since his youth days.

Chelsea has been heavily linked with the midfielder, while Man United have been looking at him as a potential incoming to bolster their central defensive midfielder issue.
