The GAA.ie Hurling Team of the Week has been announced with Limerick GAA earning four selections – the most in the side.

Kyle Hayes is in at left half-back after his stunning goal at Páirc Uí Chaoimh in the 2021 Munster Senior Hurling Championship final.

The Kildimo-Pallaskenry player started his run from the halfway line and finished off an electrifying move by firing the ball past Barry Hogan into the Tipperary net.

Cian Lynch joins him in the side, taking his place as the right-sided midfielder.

His performance on Sunday against Tipperary was fantastic and he composed the Limerick orchestra perfectly, leading the side’s second-half revival to secure a dominant win over their Munster rivals.

Dan McCormack did well against Lynch at times but could not contain the Limerick talisman who earned the Man of the Match in the Munster final.

Peter Casey and Seamus Flanagan are the other two Limerick GAA players that make the XV.

The pair were firing on all cylinders and were lethal when they got a hold of the sliotar.

Peter Casey tallied up five points for his side while Seamus Flanagan got three and nabbed a goal too, pouncing on a loose ball after Hogan denied Limerick’s Aaron Gillane.

Leinster Champions Kilkenny and Brian Lohan’s Clare have two players on the side each after their wins at the weekend.

Wexford GAA also have two players in the side following their All-Ireland exit at the hands of Clare.

Dublin, Waterford, Laois, Tipperary and Westmeath all have one player on the side.

GAA.ie Hurling Team Of The Week

Alan Nolan (Dublin); Rory Hayes (Clare), Huw Lawlor (Kilkenny), Shane Reck (Wexford); Calum Lyons (Waterford), James Maher (Kilkenny), Kyle Hayes (Limerick); Cian Lynch (Limerick), Paddy Purcell (Laois); Ryan Taylor (Clare), Jason Forde (Tipperary), Robbie Greville (Westmeath); Peter Casey (Limerick), Seamus Flanagan (Limerick), Cathal Dunbar (Wexford).

Round Two of the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship Qualifiers will see Clare take on Cork and Waterford play Galway on Saturday, July 24th.

Following the hurling action at the weekend, the draw was made, which saw Kilkenny and Limerick win the Leinster and Munster provincial titles respectively.

All sides involved in the draw were knocked out of their provincial championships at the quarter-final and semi-final stages.

The draw took place on RTÉ Radio 1’s Morning Ireland.

Two of the sides were in action at the weekend in the first round of the qualifiers, with Cork and Galway starting their journey through the backdoor in round two after losses to eventual Munster champions Limerick and Dublin – the pair were awarded a bye for round one.

Brian Lohan’s Clare progressed to the second round after beating Wexford in a match-up against rival Bainisteoir Davy Fitzgerald at Semple Stadium.

Clare’s squad showed their worth and the Banner had another game in recent history that did not showcase an overreliance on the Championship’s top scorer Tony Kelly.

Cathal Malone, David Reidy, Ryan Taylor and Aidan McCarthy all chipped in with scores throughout the game and Clare’s bench also provided 1-02 for the side.

They will face a Cork side who have been inconsistent in 2021, and with five wins from their last six games, Brian Lohan’s men will be confident of progression.

Waterford earned a date with Galway and a repeat of the 2017 All-Ireland final after a five-point win over preliminary round winners Laois.

Waterford’s fortunes have been up-and-down this season with Liam Cahill and his players struggling to get the side back into the vein of form that saw them reach the All-Ireland final last year.

Galway will play their first game after a shock loss to Mattie Kenny’s Dublin hurlers and will want to bounce back from their defeat.

The Déise will have to be on their A-game to earn a date in the All-Ireland quarter-finals with either Dublin or Tipperary.

    PREVIEW

Clare and Wexford will go head to head in Round 1 of the All-Ireland Championship Qualifiers at Semple Stadium in Thurles this coming Saturday at 1:30 pm as part of a double bill with Armagh v Monaghan live on Sky Sports Arena.

Both teams competed with one another in Divison 1 Group B of the Allianz League earlier this year. With Wexford finishing above Clare in 2nd position, a point ahead of their rivals.

When they did meet, Wexford came out with the spoils at Cusack Park in Ennis. Winning by a single point in a close encounter with a scoreline of 1-21 to 2-19.

League games do not really matter when it comes to championship form, but how close their first encounter was with one another, this game should be another hard one to call.

Wexford is coming into this game after losing to Leinster finalist’s Kilkenny after an extra-time classic with a scoreline of 2-37 to 2-29.

Their opponents also fell short in their Munster semi-final tie against Tipperary losing by 4 points.

This will be a repeat of Round 2 of the Qualifiers in last years championship. Clare came out with the victory, with a 7 point winning margin.

Conclusion

Easily one of the hardest games to call this season so far, both teams have a strong case in who is the better team.

It could come down to who will perform on the day, a bad referee decision or whoever’s management team nails their tactics.

All in all, I will have to favour Wexford in this game, they have already shown they can beat Clare, and with Davy Fitzgerald pushing for All-Ireland glory, he will be eager to defeat his former team with a strong showing here.

Prediction: Wexford by 2 points

Wicklow and Wexford will meet in round one of the Leinster Senior Football Championship for the second year in a row.

CLICK HERE FOR LIVE SCORES ON Wicklow v Wexford

The game will be available to watch on GAAGO and will kick off at 3 pm on Sunday.

The fixture last year saw Wicklow beat the Model County’s footballers by four points, scoring two goals during the 70 minutes.

The winner of this instalment will face Leinster and All-Ireland holders Dublin.

Since then, Wicklow was knocked out of the 2020 championship and both sides had a league campaign.

Both sides finished the league on a high after losing their initial games, with Wexford getting the added bonus of silverware – the Division Four Shield.

Wicklow managed an average of 1.5 goals per game in their 2021 National Football League Division Three campaign.

Their attack is not as potent as that stat may suggest but the quality of Seanie Furlong and Eoin Darcy should not be underestimated.

The two attackers have impressed under Davy Byrne and will threaten the Wexford backline often.

Their surprise win over Cavan kept the side in Division Three for 2022 and the performance of Patrick O’Connor against the reigning Ulster champions is a promising sign for the future.

The Wicklow attack will face a Wexford defence that has looked porous in 2021.

The Model men’s backline allowed Carlow back into a game they should have lost and put the game out of reach for their attack at home to Waterford.

The games were filled with cards that handicapped all three sides involved in the two games.

Specifically, Wexford goalkeeper Darragh Brooke was black-carded 37 minutes into the Waterford game.

Regardless, their defence was susceptible to counter-attacks in that same match and will have a tougher time against Davy Byrne’s Wicklow.

However, in turn, their attack has the quality to threaten Wicklow’s defence and bring the game to them that way.

Mark Rossiter, Tom Byrne and Robbie Brooks looked lively in the side’s league games.

John Tubritt racked up six points in their Division Four Shield win over Sligo.

Four goals in their last two games have added a positive twist to the season that goes well with the Shield.

However, if they are to take down Wicklow, their defence will need to lock the Wicklow forwards down.

The quality of Furlong and co. may be too much for the Model county.

Laois and Wexford will go head to head to find out who gets the second Leinster Semi-Final place in Kilkenny.

Seamus Cheddar Plunketts Laois team endured a terrible league campaign, losing all of their games and finishing bottom.

Wexford on the other hand can take positives from their league run, placing second and only behind Kilkenny by a single point.

Laois will need a massive team performance if they want to progress further into the championship.

Wexford should be too strong for them and after their previous meeting in the league, where Wexford dismantled Laois 4-17 to 0-10. It should be a walk in the park for the Yellowbellies.

Players to watch:

Laois: Ross King

Wexford: Jack O’Connor

Laois – Teams to be confirmed

Enda Rowland; Lee Cleere, Sean Downey, Donnchadh Hartnett; Ronan Broderick, Padraig Delaney, Ryan Mullaney; Fiachra C Fennell, Patrick Purcell; Aaron Dunphy, Willie Dunphy, James Ryan; James Keyes, Ross King, Stephen Maher.

RTÉ Sport are televising Galway vs Wexford this weekend. The westerners are looking to put a poor 2019 in their rearview mirror. Meanwhile, Wexford’s Leinster win last year is something Davy Fitzgerald is hoping to emulate.

The lockdown came at a bad time for Shane O’Neill whose Galway team had just begun putting a string of results together. The 2017 winners had not been themselves after 2018’s final defeat. Now, the lockdown and break from action has been a chance for the squad to reset themselves and mount a new challenge.

2019 was a year of disappointment for the Galwegians. They failed to make it out of Leinster and had a short season as a consequence. But, now a competitive Club Chamionship leaves reason for optimism among Galway supporters. St. Thomas’ won their third title in a row. One of the standouts for St. Thomas’ was Fintan Burke’s performances at full-back. This could make Dáithí Burke free to play further out the field.

However, it is a tough opener for Galway as Wexford proved themselves as the team to beat in Leinster last year. The long break means Davy Fitzgerald enters the Championship with a full squad at his disposal that is perhaps even stronger than last year’s contingent.

But, it remains to be seen how Wexford adapt to Winter Hurling. Likewise, the absence of crowds will not work in Wexford’s favour. Fitzgerald will be hoping they can pick up from where they left off in the League.

Galway are the favourites for this semi-final. Paddy Power price the westerners at 8/11. In contrast, are 11/8 and a draw is 8/1.

RTÉ Sport are broadcasting the game live.

Prediction: Draw.

Leinster Hurling Championship Semi-Final: Galway vs Wexford, Saturday, October 31st, 18:15 (Croke Park).

There are only three games going ahead in the Division 4 National League this weekend due to London’s continued unavailability. All games have an important say in who will be promoted though. Firstly, the winner of Wexford vs Wicklow will secure themselves a Division 3 place. Next, Limerick will join them if they overcome Sligo. However, if the Connacht side win, they have an outside chance of squeezing into the top two. Likewise, Antrim are in the hunt for promotion but need to beat Waterford.

Last weekend, Wicklow were emphatic against Antrim. Their seven-goals was enough to win a game in itself. As a result, they are tied top of Division 4 and need one of the favourites for promotion.

But, Wexford returned to action with a win of their own. Despite going to Limerick with a depleted squad, they ran out three-point winners. That was a much-needed confidence boost for a team that has been shrouded with uncertainty. Paul Galvin stepped away as manager just a month before the restart. Then, four positive Covid-19 tests ruled out a host of players for Galvin’s replacement Shane Roche. With this in mind, Wexford’s win last weekend is even more impressive. If they can carry that momentum into round 7, they will see themselves in Division 3 next season.

Prediction: Wicklow.

Limerick could have sealed promotion with a result over Wexford. Instead, they need to defeat Sligo to go up to Division 3. They hit just three first-half points against Wexford. In fact, it took a triple substitution at the midpoint to give the Munster men a boost. Billy Lee will be keen to ensure his team start quicker this time around.

Sligo will relish the battle with Limerick. In their own restart, they lost to Carlow at the death. As a result, their promotion hopes have thinned. Yet, a win over Limerick would give make it possible. Paul Taylor’s side face Galway in the Championship two weeks later. A promotion would provide his team with much-welcome encouragement heading into this one. They have nothing to gain from a draw. So, expect them to play off the cuff.

Prediction: Limerick.

On Thursday morning, Waterford issued a lengthy statement announcing their concession of the round 7 game against Antrim. The statement cited players’ concerns over needing to isolate after travelling north of the border as the reason. However, Antrim have since offered to sacrifice their home game in order to fulfil the fixture.

As a result, the game will now take place in Dundalk. Antrim could have taken the two points from Waterford without even playing. But, they instead stated their desire to win the game in a deserving manner:  “We believe that the integrity of the league needs to be upheld. If we are good enough to collect two points we will do it in a fair and manly manner on the field of play.”

This game is effectively a dead-rubber for Waterford. Still, it is an opportunity to get some match practice ahead of the Championship. They play Limerick the following week in the Munster quarter-final.

A victory for Antrim will put them in the promotion mix. It’s a big ask though as other results also need to go their way. Last week, their thrashing at the hands of Wicklow left much to be desired.

Prediction: Antrim.

Division 4 National League: (All games throw-in at 2pm on Saturday, October 24th)

Wexford vs Wicklow (Chadwick’s Wexford Park).

Sligo vs Limerick (Markievicz Park).

Antrim vs Waterford (Dundalk).

Limerick v Wexford, Rathkeale, 3pm Preview and live score commentary

There was big news from Wexford recently as Paul Galvin stepped down from his role as manager. Galvin cited ‘the new time and travel commitments involved’ as the reason for his departure after his family’s relocation to the West of Ireland. Now, Shane Roche takes over as interim manager after serving as a member of Galvin’s team.

Previously, Galvin had a record of three wins and two losses in the League. The defeats came against Sligo and Antrim. On the other hand, wins over London, Waterford, and Carlow have Wexford in the running for the title. Both Wicklow and Sligo share Wexford’s record though so there is no room for error if the Leinster side are to gain promotion.

Meanwhile, it’s Limerick’s title to lose. Currently, they sit top of Division 4 but are just a single point ahead of Antrim. Furthermore, the triad of Wexford, Wicklow, and Sligo could all draw level if the Connacht side trump them in round 6. Most recently, Antrim inflicted the first defeat of the League on Limerick in March. As a result, Billy Lee’s side could use the lockdown to regroup and reset before going on to contest the title.

The current standings make this the most competitive Division of the four. For example, five teams are still in the running. In addition round 7 sees Sligo host Limerick and Wexford vs Wicklow.

As important as the Limerick game is, Roche will have one eye on the Wexford tie. This is because it is the same opponent in the Leinster Championship opener on November 1st. In Munster, Limerick travel to Waterford for the provincial quarter-final.

Castletown will attempt to defend their title in the Wexford football Final this weekend against Starlights. The holders saw off St. Martin’s a semi-final where goals were the difference. On the other hand, Starlights needed extra-time to defeat Shelmaliers.

Starlights were slow to start in their semi-final tie. Shelmaliers took an early lead but when Liam Ryan found the net in the 27th minute, it was all square. It was close throughout. In fact, the sides were never more than three points apart. The second-half continued in this manner. At the full-time whistle, It was 0-11 to 1-8.

But, Starlights came out of the gates firing in extra-time. In the very first minute, Ricky Fox scored the side’s second goal and gave his side a commanding position. In terms of points, the two sides continued to cancel each other out. Then, in the last minute of the game Liam Ryan raised another green flag to ensure it was Starlights who went through. As a result, it was 3-12 to 0-14 after 80 minutes.

Likewise, Castletown were pushed all the way in their own semi-final. Similar to Starlights, they began slowly. After 15 minutes, they were 1-3 to 0-2 down. This is when Ben Brosnan rattled the net to get last year’s winners back on track.

Subsequently, Castletown kicked on. On 27 minutes it was Brosnan again to raise a green flag from the penalty spot. Next, Robbie Brooks scored their third goal of the half. But, St. Martin’s weren’t going away easily and a couple of scores of their own left them in touch. At half-time it was 3-5 vs 1-7.

After the restart, the sides continued to be well matched. Heading into the last ten minutes, Castletown had a comfortable six-point lead courtesy of their goals. However, this is when Paidi Kelly scored a major for St. Martin’s to make it an exciting finish. By the second minute of injury time St. Martin’s were level. But, Castletown had no interest in extra-time. Ben Brosnan stepped up in the 65th minute to send his team back to the final.

If Castletown are to retain their title, they would be the first team to do so in fourteen years. Starlights will certainly ensure that it will not be an easy task to do so. It’s been just three years since Starlights’ own title win. Yet, they will be ready to become kings of Wexford again.

WexfordGAA TV are live streaming the decider. Paddy Power have Castletown are 4/5 favourites to keep the trophy. But, Starlights are far from outsiders at 11/8. Meanwhile, a draw is 13/2.

Paths to the Final

Starlights: 2-10 vs 1-9 St.Mogue’s Fethard; 1-9 vs 1-11 St. Martin’s; 2-12 vs 1-12 St. James’ (Quarter-final); 3-12 vs 0-14 Shelmaliers (Semi-final, AET).

Castletown: 0-10 vs 0-7 Kilanerin; 1-13 vs 2-9 Shelmaliers; 2-14 vs 0-8 Sarsfields (Quarter-final); 3-10 vs 2-12 St. Martin’s (Semi-final).

Wexford vs Wicklow has the makings of the most competitive game in the Leinster Football Championship this weekend. The two sides were among the best in Division 4. However, Wicklow were the ones who earned promotion while Wexford came up just short.

Last weekend, these sides met in the final round of the League. The game was a promotion shoot-out with Wicklow claiming the spoils by three-points. Wicklow goalkeeper Mark Jackson was hugely influential on the result. He kicked three long-range frees that proved to be the difference. It was a twenty-minute spell in the second half that set Wicklow apart. Wexford failed to get on the scoreboard in that time and had too much to do in the closing moments.

Wexford returned to action the week before with a win over Limerick. It was an encouraging start to Shane Roche’s spell as manager after Paul Galvin stepped down. However, Wicklow halted their progress and Wexford face another year in Division 4.

There will be no second chances in the Championship this year with the qualifiers gone. So, Roche will be almost relieved his side have gotten a loss out of their system. Now, they can learn from what went wrong and apply it to Sunday’s game.

Paddy Power are unable to choose a favourite for this one. Both teams are Evens to advance. A draw is worth a look at 15/2.

The game is live on GAA GO.

Prediction: Draw.

Leinster Senior Football Championship Round 1: Wexford vs Wicklow, Sunday, November 1st, 13:30 (Chadwick’s Wexford Park).
