The FAI Women’s Cup final is set to be played on Sunday, November 21st, the Irish governing body for association football have announced.

This year’s showpiece event will be held at Tallaght Stadium with kick-off set for 5:30 pm.

While a big crowd is expected on the day, the game will also be broadcast live on RTÉ2.

The semi-finals are set for the week ending October 10th with current Cup holders Peamount United paired with 2018 and 2019 champions Wexford Youths, while Shelbourne will take on Galway WFC.

The four sides earned their spots in this year’s semi-finals after wins over Treaty United, Athlone Town, Cork City and DLR Waves respectively.

Peamount United took down Shelbourne and Wexford in their run to the cup final last year, where they dispatched of Cork City in a six-goal rout to take their second FAI Women’s Cup.

Their victory over Cork ended a decade-long drought in the competition and the side are favourites to retain their crown this season.

Peamount also lead the Women’s National League currently with Shelbourne and Wexford in second and third and Galway in fifth.

Wexford will be looking to get revenge on the holders for their 1-0 semi-final loss last November and move one step closer to winning a third cup in four years.

Shelbourne are searching for their first piece in silverware in four years and will look to end the wait with a win in Tallaght in November.

They face Galway, who won the competition in 2007 under the name Galway Ladies League.

The county league has since become a feeder for Galway WFC, who are still on course for their second FAI Women’s Cup victory.

Shelbourne will host Galway at Tolka Park while Wexford Youths will make the journey to Greenogue to play rivals Peamount United for a spot in the final.

Peamount United won the 2020 Women’s National League title by 3-1 against Shelbourne at PRL Park.

Áine O’Gorman scored twice and Karen Duggan got one as they fought back from Emily Whelan’s opener for Shels to successfully defend their title.

In front of Republic of Ireland Women’s National Team Manager Vera Pauw, it was a tight first half with few goalscoring opportunities created as victory for either team would have seen them crowned as League winners.

Shels take the lead

Less than a minute into the second half Whelan scored, despite goalkeeper Niamh Reid-Burke getting a hand to it. Shels celebrated as Peamount were left stunned.

The game started to open up after that with Duggan pulling the strings for the home side, while Ciara Grant and Whelan impressed for The Reds.

On 66 minutes, Shels broke away and Rebecca Cooke looked certain to score. Before she could unleash a shot O’Gorman came out of nowhere with a superb tackle to deny her.

Two goals for O’Gorman

At the other end O’Gorman showed her class by scoring her 13th League goal of the season from a direct free-kick, after Duggan was fouled on the edge of the penalty area.

That goal gave Peamount confidence and they took advantage as Duggan got in front of her marker to head in past Shels goalkeeper Rachael Kelly.

Grant had a fantastic opportunity to level matters on 85 minutes but the Shels midfielder failed to fully connect with the ball.

With that the game slipped away from them as O’Gorman got her second of the night. She hooked the ball in from close range and that wrapped up the League win. Peamount won the title with a game to spare as they take on Wexford Youths on December 5th.

Teams

Peamount United: Reid-Burke; O’Callaghan (Barnes 90), Walsh, Farrelly, Beirne; O’Gorman, McCartan (Doyle 65), Duggan, McEvoy (Watkins 87); Ryan-Doyle; Roche (Smyth-Lynch 65).

Shelbourne: Kelly; Gleeson (Kavanagh 78), Slattery, Finn; Graham (Mooney 85); Gargan, Cooke, Grant, Ziu, Atkinson; Whelan.

Referee: Paula Brady.

Peamount United began the Second Phase of the 2020 Women’s National League season by claiming another victory. Athlone Town and Shelbourne also won, while Bohemians held DLR Waves to a scoreless draw in their first game in Dalymount Park.

Scoreless at Dalymount

Bohemians 0-0 DLR Waves

Bohemians started the second half of the season by featuring in Dalymount Park for the first time and by collecting a point.

There were few clear-cut chances for either side in this fiery encounter. Both will see it, however, as a point gained considering the effort over 90 minutes.

Sinéad O’Farrelly had DLR hearts thumping with a late free-kick but Bohs were unable to get in behind their opponents to break the deadlock.

The visitors will be pleased by the energy showed by Carla McManus. She could prove to be an attacking threat for them, while Mel Clarke made her debut in the second half.

O’Gorman maintains her form

Galway WFC 0-2 Peamount United

Ahead of linking up with the Republic of Ireland Women’s National Team this weekend, Áine O’Gorman maintained her good recent form.
The Peamount captain scored the first goal after 24 minutes to move ahead of team-mate Eleanor Ryan-Doyle in the Golden Boot race for the Top Goalscorer.

It was far from smooth sailing for the champions however as Galway applied a lot of pressure and probably deserved more from the game as they kept goalkeeper Niamh Reid-Burke busy.

Peamount were able to keep their hosts at bay until Lucy McCartan scored in the final 10 minutes to make sure of the win.

Athlone claim more points

Treaty United 2-3 Athlone Town

Athlone showed their determination to pick up more points in this clash.

Manager Tommy Hewitt placed his trust in young players for their debut season in the League. Their gradual improvement has been clear to see, especially in the likes of goalscorers Kayla Brady and Katelyn Keogh.

It was Kellie Brennan who got them started in Jackman Park before Brady extended their lead. Treaty did hit back through Cayla Davis before the interval.

Keogh scored on 59 minutes and that proved to be the winner in spite of Gillian Keenan getting one back.

Ziu stars at Ferrycarrig Park

Wexford Youths 2-5 Shelbourne

Shels attacker Jessica Ziu started and finished the scoring at Ferrycarrig Park as she completed a hat-trick.

The Dubliner scored just three minutes and even though Ciara Rossiter responded for the hosts, it was clear The Reds were fired up for this one.

Ziu got another in the first half and Noelle Murray got her first of the game too. Dave Bell’s side showed just how clinical they can be when playing at speed.

Captain Kylie Murphy pulled one back for Wexford on 64 minutes. Further goals from Murray and Ziu, however, wrapped up a big win for Shels, who are desperate to keep pressure on League leaders Peamount.

Bohemians finally achieved a win in the First Phase of the 2020 Women’s National League season but they had to win until the final game to taste success.

The Dublin side defeated Athlone Town, while Galway WFC, Wexford Youths and Shelbourne all recorded wins on the road.

Bohs finally get a win

Bohemians 1-0 Athlone Town
Supporters finally saw the potential of the Bohemians squad when they recorded a 1-0 win at the Oscar Traynor Centre.

It was just before half-time when Niamh Kenna put Bohs ahead. Though it was a nervous second period for the hosts, this is the result that they needed to boost their confidence.

Athlone are also newcomers this season and they made sure the Dublin side fought hard  to take all three points. There wasn’t much between the two teams but the home win will go down in the history books.

Cork’s winning streak ends

Cork City 1-2 Galway WFC
A run of five League wins in a row came to a halt for Cork as two second-half goals from Lynsey McKey proved to be the difference in this game.

Cork have been in fantastic form but Galway have been playing well too.

Billy Clery’s side have largely gone under the radar in the First Phase but their game-winning ability was on full display here as the wily McKey got them going.

Two goals from the experienced striker opened up a lead that Cork could not close in spite of a late goal from midfielder Becky Cassin.

Kingsley is a Blessing for Wexford

DLR Waves 0-2 Wexford Youths
Flying winger Blessing Kingsley lived up to her billing by getting Wexford off the mark in the UCD Bowl.

Inside the opening half hour Wexford showcased their attacking flair with some clever movement and slick passing. It looked only a matter of time before they would score and Kingsley did just that.

DLR tried to respond but they could not find that breakthrough that their positive play merited. The work being done by manager Graham Kelly is revealing itself with each passing game and they are not far away from clicking altogether.

Wexford have several players who know how to grind out results in this League, as well as some exciting youngsters, such as goal scorer Aoibheann Clancy, who want to contribute.

Shels rout Treaty

Treaty United 0-7 Shelbourne
Following back-to-back defeats in the League and FAI Women’s Cup, Shels needed to register a response that showed everyone that they are still very much in the title race.

It took time but once Emily Whelan got their first goal it all started to flow for Dave Bell’s team with Ciara Grant, Noelle Murray and Whelan again scoring inside the first half.

Treaty made it very physical as they contested every ball. Nobody could question their effort but, ultimately, Shels were too strong for them.

Two goals from Jessica Gargan and one from Mia Dodd wrapped up a comprehensive victory for Shels.

The Second Phase of the Women’s National League will begin next Saturday, 17th October 2020. The League structure will split into two – one group of five teams, one group of four teams.

Peamount United jumped to the top of the Women’s National League table following an impressive Dublin Derby victory, while Cork City, DLR Waves and Galway also secured wins.

Athlone Town 1-4 DLR Waves
It may have gone under many people’s radars but the steady progress being made by DLR Waves was bound to lead to a big result sooner or later – and this was it.

Graham Kelly approaches matters in a realistic fashion and he would have been encouraging his players to keep repeating the same routine because practice makes perfect.

It certainly worked in this fixture as Katie Malone, Catherine Cronin and Ally O’Keeffe netted a goal each while an own goal from Leah Brady helped secure the three points.

Katelyn Keogh got one for Athlone, who know that they need to tighten up defensively but there are periods in their play that are really encouraging.

Galway WFC 1-0 Treaty United
One goal was enough to swing this game in favour of Galway as Chloe Singleton fired in just before the interval to earn a third League win of the season.

The hosts thought that they had taken the lead inside the opening five minutes when Shauna Brennan headed in but the goal was ruled out.

Singleton proved to be the biggest attacking threat for Billy Clery’s team as she got into great positions, unloaded a stinging shot and then got her goal.

Treaty attempted to fight their way back into the game but luck wasn’t on their side as Galway’s midfield and defence stood firm to hold them out.

Shelbourne 1-6 Peamount United
There is never any shortage of drama from this Dublin derby and that proved to the case again in Tolka Park as Peamount knocked Shelbourne off top spot.

Westmeath native Lucy McCartan got things started for the champions with a finish from close range and the goals just kept on coming for James O’Callaghan’s side as they maintained a high line.

Eleanor Ryan-Doyle and substitute Stephanie Roche scored two apiece, while captain Áine O’Gorman also got in on the act as Peamount outplayed their hosts in almost every area.

Shels did get one goal back late on, through Jessica Gargan, but it was not a day to remember for the north Dublin outfit.

Wexford Youths 1-2 Cork City
The form guide suggests that Cork are the team to beat with Ronan Collins’ side bouncing back from a slow start to the season to prove their quality.

This win away to the FAI Women’s Senior Cup holders was well-earned as they got off to a brilliant start with a goal from the ever-impressive Éabha O’Mahony.

Wexford responded through Kylie Murphy to draw the scores level, but Saoirse Noonan, who has been in excellent form of late, got Cork back in front.

There was plenty of good passages of play from both sides, although it was Cork who looked the most likely to take the points and that is exactly what happened.

There were first wins of the 2020 Women’s National League season for both Athlone Town and Cork City, while the title race took an interesting turn. With the top two teams – Shelbourne and Peamount United – not winning, Wexford Youths and Galway WFC took a giant leap forward by picking up positive results.

Athlone Town 3-2 Treaty United

There was a lot of talk about the goalscoring potential of Aoife Horgan ahead of this fixture and the Treaty United forward responded by doubling her tally for the season. However, this day belonged to Athlone, who responded to Horgan’s first goal after three minutes with a goal of their own through Katelyn Keogh – poking the ball home from close range. Horgan hit back when she pounced on a parry from goalkeeper Niamh Coombes, but it was all square by the interval when Athlone captain Paula Doran chipped the ball into the back of the net from the edge of the penalty area. Treaty will be disappointed in how they ultimately lost this one as the third goal came from defensive errors that eventually saw Kellie Brennan score. This is a big win for Athlone that will give them a lot of confidence.

Bohemians 3-4 Cork City

Even though they haven’t played Week 2, Cork City made a fast start to this game by scoring two goals inside the opening half hour through Lauren Egbuloniu and Christina Dring. Bohs have been making steady improvements and they scrapped their way back into the contest due to goals from Aoife Robinson and Alannah Maxwell. Cork retook the lead when Lauren Shine netted a brace late on and that proved to be too much for the home side, even though Maxwell got another goal back. For Ronan Collins’ Cork side, this is an important win as it gets them off the mark for the season and shows that their young side can score goals.

Galway WFC 1-1 Shelbourne

It was always going to take something special to separate these two teams considering their competitive nature. And it looked as though that arrived through Chloe Singleton’s thunderbolt strike on 27 minutes, The hosts needed to register an early blow to their opponents and Singleton provided exactly that to put Billy Clery’s team in front. Shels, who went into this game as League leaders, knew that they had to respond. Their goal did not arrive until the hour mark when Jessica Ziu got enough space to fire in. While both teams will be disappointed not to have secured a win, a point apiece will boost their chances of being in the top half of the table when the season splits.

Wexford Youths 3-0 Peamount United

Ellen Molloy will be hoping to make the final cut for the Republic of Ireland Women’s National Team squad following her first call-up and a brace of goals here will certainly have helped. The Kilkenny native netted one in each half after Nicola Sinnott opened the scoring on 12 minutes when finding herself in the right place to meet a delivery from a corner kick and head in. Peamount had not conceded a goal in their previous four games this season, but they fell further behind when Molloy showed her alertness to steal possession from Dearbhaile Beirne and then fire into the back of the net. Tom Elmes’ team were looking for a reaction following a narrow defeat to Shelbourne and this was it as Molloy wrapped things up when curling in a left-footed effort after her first shot was blocked by keeper Niamh Reid-Burke.

Treaty United celebrated an historic first win in the Women’s National League as they overcame DLR Waves, while Peamount United and Shelbourne also won at the weekend.

Athlone Town 0-3 Shelbourne
On her first start of the season, Noelle Murray put Shels ahead at Athlone Town Stadium when she scored a penalty, awarded following a foul on Jessica Ziu.

The Reds went into this game-week as League leaders and ensured that would remain the same as substitutes Niamh McLaughlin and Kate Mooney added further goals late on.

Dave Bell’s team have started to find their rhythm in their general play but there is still more to come from them with a difficult game against Wexford Youths to come next.

Athlone knew that this was always going to be a massive test for their young side and they will be better for it in the long term.

Bohemians 0-3 Peamount United
Áine O’Gorman continued her quest to win the Golden Boot award for the third time in her career after scoring a brace moved her to four goals for the season.

The Republic of Ireland veteran got the League champions off the mark just before half-time when she converted a penalty past Bohs goalkeeper Courtney Maguire.

Eleanor Ryan-Doyle put Peamount further ahead when connecting with a pass from Sabhdh Doyle before O’Gorman wrapped up the win with a late finish.

While Bohs have lost four straight games, there were signs of improvement and if they trust in manager Sean Byrne then the newcomers should turn things around.

DLR Waves 0-2 Treaty United
A first League win of the season for Treaty United was fully deserved as Dave Rooney’s side played with a real determination to get off the mark.

It was actually the home team who started brightest with the quartet of Katie Malone, Niamh Prior, Kerri Letmon and Nadine Clare all going close in the first period.

Treaty simply responded by applying more pressure and that resulted in them creating some chances of their own with Chloe Connolly threatening to break the deadlock just three minutes before she actually did when scoring from close range.

Almost straight away Treaty got their second goal when Aoife Horgan – a lively striker who is a menace for opposing defenders – slotted in. To make matters worse for DLR, Nicole Keogh was sent off late on.

Wexford Youths’ clash with Cork City was postponed and will be rescheduled in due course.

The second round of games in the 2020 Women’s National League saw Athlone Town make their League debut, with Treaty United were on a bye as part of the nine-team structure.

Athlone Town 0-1 Wexford Youths
A home win on their League debut may have been denied by a second-half goal, but Athlone will take a huge amount of confidence from their performance.

Tommy Hewitt has built a squad that will rely on youth and the local trio of Kayleigh Shine, Kayla Brady and Katelyn Keogh – all of whom trained with the Republic of Ireland Women’s Under-19s last week – all impressed.

Wexford found it difficult to break down the League’s newcomers with Ellen Molloy, Kylie Murphy and Ciara Rossiter all going close with chances on goal.

The visitors got their goal on 72 minutes when Vanessa Ogbonna recorded her second assist of the season by crossing for Aisling Frawley to head in and make it back-to-back wins for Wexford.

Bohemians 1-4 Galway WFC
In what was their first home game in the League, Bohemians suffered an early set-back when goalkeeper Courtney Maguire was sent off on her debut.

The Gypsies managed to make to the interval by holding Galway, but the visitors broke the deadlock after 52 minutes when striker Aoife Thompson fired in from close range.

Bohemians hit back straight away with Bronagh Kane netting her first goal for the club. Galway responded by making a triple substitution and began to press higher up the pitch.

Shauna Fox headed them back in front before substitute Ellie Rose O’Flaherty nodded in a cross from Shauna Brennan and Thompson finished things off with her second of the game.

Cork City 0-3 Peamount United
League champions Peamount continued their excellent start to the new season with a second win, which brings their tally to eight goals scored, none conceded and six points collected.

Stephanie Roche got them going after just three minutes before she turned provider for team-mate Áine O’Gorman to extend their lead and then Eleanor Ryan-Doyle slotted in to make it 3-0 before half-time.

Cork played some nice football in patches but found it difficult to keep up with the pace & power of their opponents. The introduction of debutants Laura Shine and Leah Murphy indicates that they are building for the long-term.

The home team piled the pressure on in the last 15 minutes, in a period that saw Louise Masterson sent off for Peamount, but they could not find the goal that their effort deserved.

DLR Waves 1-2 Shelbourne
It was the fourth minute of added time when Shelbourne captain Pearl Slattery scored her second goal in as many games to guide her club to victory.

DLR, who made five changes to their starting line-up, felt deflated at the end of this contest as they thought that they had done enough to earn a second draw of the campaign, having held Galway WFC last week.

One of the players who came into the DLR team was goalkeeper Eve Badana and she had to be on high alert to deny both Alex Kavanagh and Jessica Ziu in the first half.

Just past the hour mark, Shels took the lead when Ciara Grant deftly lifted the ball over Badana. The hosts responded through a Niamh Prior free-kick and were holding on until Slattery’s late winner.

Peamount United v DLR Waves, PRL Park, KO 19:45
Shelbourne v Bohemians, Tolka Park, KO 19:45
