Hockey: Irish Senior Cup Finals weekend

With the days getting longer and the temperatures rising albeit slowly it is nearly time to say goodbye to another hockey season. But before we all head our separate ways there is one big occasion left in the Irish hockey calendar with the Electric Ireland Women’s and Men’s Irish Senior Cup semi-finals and finals taking place this weekend in our national hockey stadium in UCD.

Starting with The Electric Ireland Women’s side of the competition. The first game of the weekend is between UCD and Railway Union on Saturday which has a start time of 10:30. Railway Union will come into the semi-final bursting with confidence having been crowned Electric Ireland IHL champions as recently as last weekend. UCD winners in 2009 will be anxious to bring the cup back to their trophy cabinet after a 3 year absence. UCD qualified for the semi-final by beating Pegasus 2-1 with Anna O’Flanagan scoring a late goal to knock the Ulster and 2011 Electric Ireland Senior Cup champions out. Both sides boast big talents among their squads a captivating game awaits.

In the other Electric Ireland semi-final Loreto face Queens at 12:30. Loreto who are no strangers to winning this competition made it to the semi-final stage by beating Lisnagarvey, Belfast HQ and Old Alex. Loreto will be hoping Cathy McKean will be able to add to her two goal tally she got against Old Alex in the quarter finals. Queens arrive at the semi-finals stage having beaten Randalstown, Portadown and Dublin University en route.

Over to the men’s side of the draw. At 15:00 on Saturday afternoon Railway Union plays Lisnagarvey. Railway will be hoping to make their first appearance in an Irish Senior Cup Final since 1975. On the way to the semi-final Railway has defeated some top quality opposition South Antrim, Three Rock Rovers and Glenanne by 3-0 in the quarter final. Lisnagarvey who are on for a rare IHL and Irish senior cup double will no doubt be keen to take to the pitch after their IHL success last weekend. Fresh from winning The Jimmy O’Connor Memorial Trophy for the IHLs best player Timmy Cockram will no doubt be the focal point for Lisnagarvey.

The final game of the semi-finals has a 17:00 start and sees Cork Harlequins play Instonians. Cork Harlequins who most recently won the cup in 2006 will be hoping to build on their quarter final where they defeated Banbridge on a score line of 2-1. Instonians made it through to the semi-finals by defeating North Down, Mossley and NICS in the quarter finals where they left it late with Julian Lewis getting the only goal of the game.
