In Sunday’s Dressage event at Greenwich Park, Camilla Speirs posted an excellent score of 47.80 and with the Cross Country to follow today, she remains quietly hopeful of challenging for a medal.
Speirs from Athy, Co. Kildare ended Sunday in joint 27th place and would like nothing more than an early birthday present – she is 23 on 23rd August . Aoife Clark and Master Crusoe are 32nd,
followed by Joseph Murphy (53rd), Mark Kyle (61st) and Michael Ryan (64th)
Yesterday riding Portersize Just A Jiff , scored 47.80 to finish the best of the Irish on a day which started in bright sunshine and ended in wet and very difficult conditions in historic Greenwich Park.
Ms Speirs said later : “He knew when he heard the crowd and they announced our name, then he went in and showed off.”
“Though he is small, he’s a little hero and seems to grow another five inches when you sit on him. He is well-adapted for the cross-country course because he is a nippy little horse and has no big galloping stride.”
“I’m just delighted,” Speirs went on . “All year I’ve been collecting good scores. I wanted to be in the 40s and to get a 47 in your first Olympic Games is really special.”
The final show jumping phase is scheduled for Tuesday, when both team and individual medals will be decided.
Ireland currently lie in 10th position in the Team event.
