Rain weary South Afica cancel tour of Ireland

According to the Irish Independent, Ireland have had to cancel their four-match Twenty 20 series against South Africa ‘A’ on Monday evening after agreeing to the visitors’ request to cut short their rain-ruined tour and return home.

The South Africans have barely enjoyed a rain-free day since arriving at the start of the month, and the cancellation of the first T 20 clash at Oakhill, Co Wicklow due to the soggy conditions, was the final straw for a squad seeking meaningful practice ahead of next month’s World T 20 event.

The curtailment has caused a headache for Ireland coach Phil Simmons, who saw the four games against strong opposition as a key phase of his own planning for the World T 20 in Sri Lanka.

The cancellation of the two T 20 games on Friday and Sunday means that the new national stadium at Malahide will have to wait until next summer for its first taste of international cricket.
