St Colman’s beat St Jarlath’s in schools final

St Colman’s Newry 2-10 St Jarlath’s Tuam 0-15

St Colman’s Newry successfully defended their Hogan Cup title, with a narrow one point victory over St Jarlath’s Tuam at Croke Park on Saturday afternoon.

Colman’s made a great start and looked like they would win this match easy. They hit two goals in the opening eleven minutes to open up a six-point lead. Jack Haughey was the first to find the Galway net, his looping shot just sneaking in under the crossbar.

Shortly after, full forward Jerome Johnston broke through two tackles before finding the net to give the Down team a comfortable lead. However, Jarlaths fought back and gradually worked their way back into the game. Shane Walsh was in excellent form from placed balls and ate into the Colman’s lead.

Three points by corner forward Sean Silke just before the break, left the scoreline at 2-4 to 0-9 at the interval. Jarlath’s started strongly after the restart and Walsh scored two points to give the Galway side the lead for the first time. However, Colman’s were never going to give up their title without a fight and scores from Mooney, Shay McArdle and Johnston were enough to get them over the line.
