A “sell out” Good Friday attendance at the boxing charity event at the Royal Hotel, Bray saw local heroine, Katie Taylor score a convincing , unanimous points victory over former European Kick Boxing champion, and now Spanish 57 kg boxing titleholder, Maria Carmen Romero Molina from Murcia.
You will recall that Taylor had defeated Romero at Dublin’s Citywest Hotel and Conference Centre in mid-March when their fight then was part of the Willie Casey/Guillermo Rigondeaux world title fight undercard.
As at Citywest, Romero tried her utmost but Taylor’s win on Friday was if anything much more convincing than on the previous occasion. Credit though to Romero who stood in at short notice when fellow Spaniard, 60 kg champion, Jennifer Miranda Maqueda had to withdraw due to a recent injury sustained in Bilbao during the national championships.
Coach and Dad Peter later commented: ‘It was a great contest last night and we would like to thank everyone for showing up to support Katie. It was a brilliant performance from Katie and she won comprehensively”. Good preparation for her forthcoming European Union title defence in Katowice, Poland though before that she faces up to German titleholder, Maike Klueners at the Walter Raleigh Hotel in Youghal on 6 May as part of what promises to be a great night’s boxing ,organised by St John’s Boxing Club in Fermoy
