One of Glorious Goodwood’s great races of modern times could be in the offering if 2,000 Guineas sensation Frankel takes on Canford Cliffs in the Group One Quipco Sussex Stakes next month.
Goodwood bosses say there’s every chance a clash between the best three-year-old in Europe and last season’s highest-rated British miler could happen at this years festival.
The Richard Hannon trained Canford Cliffs began his 2011 campaign with victory in the JLT Lockinge Stakes at Newbury and followed up by beating Goldikova at Royal Ascot, his fifth win at the top level. Frankel also remains on target for Goodwood, after his impressive 2,000 Guineas triumph and Royal Ascot victory. Trainer Sir Henry Cecil said after his latest victory that they would ride him differently in future.
The £300,000 Quipco Sussex Stakes provides the first opportunity for the Classic generation to take on their elders over a mile. Canford Cliffs, ridden by Goodwood specialist Richard Hughes, came out on top last year in a great duel with the year-older Rip Van Winkle. There are currently 35 horses entered for the race on July 27th .
A showdown between the pair would capture the imagination of race fans everywhere and – as Richard Hannon said – would fill a racecourse. Richard Hughes regular rider of Canford Cliffs said in his column in the Racing Post last Saturday that he would be picking his rides very carefully in the coming weeks as his does not want to fall foul of the stewards and have to watch Canford Cliffs take on Frankel from the stands.
