As we reported in SportsNewsIreland at the time, Bray’s Katie Taylor, annexed her fourth successive European Union Elite title in Katowice in early June so no surprise then that she has now been chosen as the “sportswoman of the month” by the Irish Times/Irish Sports Council. For 25 yrs old Taylor this is her 7th such award in 7 years – remember , one can only be honoured once a year in the monthly awards.
The European Union title was her 11th major international crown and by general consent of all present her final performance when she ‘overwhelmed’ Karolina Graczyk, 25-9 was a ‘near perfect performance’ from the Irish woman – it ensured her 38th win in a row in major championship events as she had already overcome Denitsa Eliseeva of Bulgaria, Italy’s Marzia Davide, and Chantelle Cameron of England (a former European kick boxing titleholder) on her way to the final – in all she received 80 points in her four bouts whilst conceding but 30.

Next up is the European Championships in Rotterdam in October and then in Spring 2012, the all-important Worlds in China follow. That of course is the only qualifier for the 2012 Olympic Games and a top eight finish is essential if Taylor is to achieve her lifelong ambition of representing Ireland in the Olympic Games.
“Qualifying for the Olympics is my ultimate goal and there’s no doubt that the next World Championships will be the biggest tournament of my life,” she said. “I won gold at the World Championships in China a few years ago, the judging was very fair at that tournament and I’m confident that it will be the same next time.”
June was a great month for Irish’ women in sport’ – remember the fine achievements of such as Annalise Murphy, Kate Veale, Aileen Morrison – all worthy contenders for the June award
