Foroughi, Colvert and Lieghio star in Ostrava

Day 2 of the European U23 Athletics Championships in Ostrava, Czech Republic saw some excellent performances from Irish athletes.

Tallaght AC’s Anthony Lieghio finished a creditable 6th in the final of the men’s 800m on Friday afternoon. He was less than a second behind the bronze medal winner in a time of 1:48.77, with the gold won by Poland’s Adam Kszczot the 21 years old European Indoor Champion, in 1:46.32

Kourosh Foroughi (Star of the Sea AC) qualified for Sunday’s final clearing 2.14 metres, achieving every height bar one first time. He qualified 2nd from Group A. An excellent and very consistent performer as those who watched the event in the Stadium or via Eurosport TV can testify.

Crusaders AC’s Steven Colvert won the 1st heat of the men’s 200m in his best time of the season to date – 20.95 seconds .He is in action again on Saturday morning’s semi-final and will be hoping to qualify for Saturday afternoon’s final and another personal best if not a medal.

Dooneen AC’s Timmy Crowe went out at the semi-final stage of the 400m hurdles, finishing 7th in 52.44, as did Paul Byrne (St Abban’s AC) also 7th in his semi in 51.93, which was won by Gateshead Harriers’ Niall Flannery representing Great Britain.

Ferrybank’s Niamh Whelan, Ireland’s only female competitor in the sprints did qualify for Saturday’s semi-final albeit as a fastest loser.

Clonliffe Harriers, 21 year old Gregan has a realistic chance of a medal in Saturday’s 400 metres final though up against a top class field including British athletes Luke Lennon-Ford and Nigel Levine. Gregan is likely to have to improve upon his 46.21 personal best if he is to medal here..
