Three Irish players were involved in today’s first round of main draw singles at the Green Property Men’s Irish Open $15,000 ITF Futures event at Fitzwilliam Lawn Tennis Club.
First up on Court 2 this morning was Irish qualifier Mark Bowtell who faced his LSU team-mate Neal Skupski. In a tight match which lasted two and a half hours, Bowtell emerged the winner on a 64 57 63 scoreline.
The lunchtime match on the show court featured Ireland’s Davis Cup player James McGee and Stefan Sterland-Markovic – the British qualifier. McGee, who is recovering from an illness, was only on court for an hour and he won through on a scoreline of 61 64.
17 year old Ciaran Fitzgerald played the final match of the day and after recovering from being a set down eventually beat Keelan Oakley (GBR) to earn his first ATP point. He won on a scoreline of 16 64 62
Tomorrow’s order of play commences at 11.00am with James Cluskey against Simon Cauvard (FRA) who has a current ATP ranking of 605. At the same time on court 2, Sam Barry plays Stefan Borg (SWE).
The lunchtime match (1.00pm) features Davis Cup hero Barry King and the number 6 seed Ruan Roelofse (RSA).
In the evening match on Centre Court (5.30pm) John Morrissey is up against the number 1 seed Charles-Antoine Brezac (FRA).
The Men’s Irish Open runs till the 23rd July and admission is free each day.
