Roscommon will face Tyrone at Croke Park on Saturday afternoon with the winner progressing to meet Dublin in the All-Ireland quarter finals. The encounter will be the first Championship match between the two counties and sees two of last year’s All-Ireland quarter finalists do battle.

Roscommon will still be reeling after losing to Mayo in the Connaught final after holding a comfortable half-time lead. The Rossies enjoyed an easy start to their Connaught campaign, racking up a 3-21 to 1-11 victory over New York. D Shine (0-5) and S Kilbride (1-4) were the main contributors for Roscommon on that occasion.

Leitrim had beaten Sligo in the Connaught quarter final, but provided no resistance to Roscommon in the semi final. Fergal O’Donnell’s charges recorded an easy 2-12 to 0-6 victory, with S Kilbride scoring 0-5 and D Shine and C Devaney scoring 1-1 apiece.

In challenging conditions in the Connaught final, however, Roscommon lost by 0-13 to 0-11 to Mayo, despite eight points from D Shine. Roscommon could only muster two points against the breeze in the second half as they surrendered a four point half time lead.

Tyrone have taken the scenic route through the Championship, but will be confident of setting up a repeat of last year’s quarter final encounter with Dublin.
The O’Neill County narrowly overcame Monaghan by 1-13 to 1-11 in the Ulster quarter final, but succumbed to Donegal by a score line of 2-6 to 0-9 in the semis.

Tyrone rebounded well to battle past Longford and Armagh in the qualifiers. Seven points from Peter Harte and 1-2 from Sean Cavanagh helped Tyrone to a 1-17 to 0-15 victory over Longford, while Mickey Harte’s men beat Armagh by 2-13 to 0-13. A quick fire 1-4 before half-time in the latter match was crucial in swinging the tide towards Tyrone. Tommy McGuigan (1-1) and Peter Harte (0-4) were the top scorers for the Tyrone.

Overall, Roscommon have scored an average of 2-14 while conceding 0-11. Tyrone have only scored 1-13 and conceded 1-11.

Mickey Harte has named an unchanged team for Saturday’s match, while Roscommon have yet to confirm their starting line-up.
