It was a ‘disappointed’ Derval O’Rourke who caught the 18.40 Aer Lingus Flight from Gatwick on Saturday evening having failed to qualify for the final of the prestigious Aviva London Grand Prix 100m hurdles at the Crystal Palace Sports Centre.
All the signs were there that Derval would qualify for the final. She was drawn in heat two, knew what was needed to qualify after a fast first heat and had quality opposition in her heat. Alas it was not to be as she finished fourth in the second heat, which was in fact significantly slower than heat one so that whilst the top three from each heat automatically went through to the final, so too did the two ‘fastest losers’ and both were from heat one.
Derval now aims to win her Ninth National hurdles title when she takes part in the event on Sunday at the Woodies All Ireland National finals in Dublin. The London event was won in 12.58 secs by the impressive Australian, Sally Pearson, unbeaten this year, who was followed home by Danielle Carruthers of the U.S.A (12.67) and Team GB’s Tiffany Ofili-Porter (12.78).
In her heat on Saturday Derval O’Rourke had finished fourth in 13.28 behind qualifiers Carruthers (12.81), Ofili-Porter and another American Yvette Lewis.
O’Rourke is hoping to compete in the hurdles on Wednesday at the Loughborough university meeting in Leicestershire where a likely opponent would be Team GB’s World Pentathlon champion, and no mean hurdler, Jessica Ennis.
