Cesc Fabregas scored his first Barcelona goal as the European Champions added to their recent trophy haul by beating Porto to claim the UEFA super cup.
Europa League winners Porto had threatened to make it an uncomfortable evening for Pep Guardiola’s men as they enjoyed the better of the opening exchanges however once the prolific Lionel Messi took advantage of some poor defending on 39 minutes to give the Spanish side a 1-0 half time lead, there was only going to be one outcome in this game.
Up to that point Porto had been impressive with Hulk showing why the top clubs in Europe were keen on his services, the striker going close with a couple of efforts.
Barcelona were struggling to their rhythm going although Pedro did go close with a lobbed effort on 30 minutes. That effort kick started the Catalan’s in to action with Xavi seeing a 25 yard effort tipped over then the opening goal arrived, Fredy Gaurin’s poor back pass intercepted by Messi who didn’t need a second invite to advance to goal and score.
Porto came out for the second half all guns blazing and had two long distance efforts saved by Victor Valdes while Villa and Messi again both went close for Barca.
With 10 minutes remaining former Arsenal star Fabregas came into the fray and the midfielder had to wait just 7 minutes to net his first goal for this new club, controlling Messi’s chip over the defence with his chest before volleying the ball into the net.
With the clock running down Porto’s night went from bad to worse as Gaurin saw red for a foul on Javier Mascherano.
The win means that Barcelona have now claimed a remarkable 13 trophy’s under Gaurdiola and following their Spanish super cup win over Real Madrid last week will head into the new season with two trophy already in the cabinet and no doubt a few more to come.
