The victory of Maybe at the Curragh this past Sunday was not only confirmation that she is a filly of tremendous class but it also reinforces just how special a stallion Galileo has become.
10 years ago this week Galileo was gearing up for his showdown with Fantastic Light in the Irish Champion Stakes. That day, in front of a record 17,000 strong crowd, the pair thrilled racegoers with a duel that will remain etched in our collective memory.
Despite losing out that day Galileo’s reputation was enhanced and when he retired to stud at the end of his three year old career expectations were high that his second career would be as good as his racing career.
His credentials were obvious. Not only was he by champion sire, the legendary, Sadler’s Wells, he was out of the Arc winner Urban Sea. On pedigree alone he was entitled to be a successful stallion, yet he had the looks and the race record to back it up. All he needed was a chance.
Yet things didn’t go smoothly when Galileo retired to stud. Despite been a duel Derby winner he was shunned in favour of more proven sires, most notably his daddy Sadler’s Wells and the much vaunted Danehill.
In the beginning his fee was set at €37,500. Some may say now that was a bargain of a lifetime. One man, Jim Bolger, could sense what a bargain it was and he moved in quickly to exploit it. He would be richly rewarded.
Immediately Galileo was a success. He sired a classic winner in Sixties Icon in his first crop and from there things only got better.
There had been a buzz around Teofilo for some time before he made his debut for Jim Bolger. A strapping son of Galileo, great things was expected of the colt. When he hit the track he lived up to the hype.
An undefeated two year old campaign saw Teofilo crowned champion two year old. It was expected to be the first of many accolades heaped upon the colt. However faith intervened and the horse was retired after an injury early in his three year old career.
The success of Teofilo showed the potential that Galileo possessed. He would prove it to be no fluke. He bagged his first Derby winner when his chestnut son New Approach swooped late and fast in the 2008 Epsom Derby.
This year alone he has sired the likes of Maybe, Roderic O’Connor, Treasure Beach and Golden Lilac and King George hero Nathaniel. He has also thrown the incomparable Franklel, who exploits on the track this year has earned him legendary status in the sport.
In all, he is the sire of 54 Group winners which is no mean feat considering his first crop didn’t hit the track until 2005. At this point Galileo has sired a 100 stakes winner in his stud career. That is ratified air, and has drawn comparisons with his own sire Sadler’s Wells.
In time he could very well outstrip his sire in champion horses that he produces. The heir to the mantle of Sadler’s Wells is heir no longer. Galileo is and will be a galaxy apart for years to come.
