Loughnane finishes 16th in 20km Walk

Irish hopes rested with walker Olive Loughnane on Day 4 but the day belonged to the reigning champion Olga Kaniskina.

Olive Loughnane (Loughrea AC) finished 16th today in the 20km walk in 1:34.02 at the IAAF World Track and Field Championships in Daegu, South Korea. Loughnane who finished second at the World Championships in 2009, was competing in conditions that were very tough going with
humidity levels at 88%.

The Galway woman who was focused on making the podium, drifted from the leading pack 25 minutes into the race following an injection of pace by the Russian trio of Olga Kaniskina, Vera Sokolova and Anisya Kirdyapkina. Although she managed to work her way back to the leading
pack, subsequent lifts in pace saw her move further down the field to 23rd place at halfway point, over 23 seconds adrift from the leader. At 15km mark that gap had increased to 2 minutes, with Loughnane in 20th place. She finished in 16th position some 4 minutes adrift from Olga Kaniskina, who successfully retained her title in 1:29:42.

The Irish in action tomorrow are as follows (Irish Time): Alistair Cragg in the Men’s 5000m Round One at 2.05am, Irish Record Deirdre Ryan will compete in the Women’s High Jump qualification rounds at 2.45am and Ciaran O’Lionaird (Leevale AC) will compete in the semi-final of the Men’s 1500m at 11.55am.
