Rovers complete double swoop

A busy day for Shamrock Rovers in the transfer market. Having agreed to transfer Enda Stevens to Aston Villa at the end of January, now comes news of two new signings by the Hoops.

Rovers have had a successful day in the market, completing the signing of Rohan Ricketts and Jim Paterson.

The signings are a boost for the Hoops ahead of the run in to the end of the Airtricity League season, and the Europa League Groups Stages campaign.

Midfielder, Ricketts previously had spells with Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, and Wolverhampton. The 28 years old Ricketts has been capped for England at under-18 and under-20 level. He played for England at the under-20 level in the Toulon Tournament, France in 2002.

Having made his senior debut for Arsenal against Manchester United in 2001/2, Ricketts took the unusual route of joining Arsenal’s rivals Tottenham Hotspur becoming only the fourth player to make the switch from Arsenal to Tottenham Hotspur and only the twelfth to appear for both sides since the formation of the North London arch rivals.

In a colourful career, the likeable Rickets has also played for Coventry City, Barnsley, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Toronto FC, Diósgyőri VTK in Hungary, and FC Dacia Chişinău of the Moldovan National Division and more recently at SV Wilmershaven in Germany. He has also had loan spells at Southend and at Queens Park Rangers.

On his @RohanRicketts twitter account, Rovers new signing had this to say earlier in the day “I’m buzzing! I got some news for all of you regarding my search for a club. The search is OVER! I’m off to meet my new club now.”

And as a later follow up he added “Im happy to say I’m just done my medical for @shamrockrovers and I’m on my way to sign the contract. I am absolutely buzzing to get playing” – “Contract has been signed. I can’t wait to get into training with the lads. This is an exciting challenge especially with the Europa comp”.

Meanwhile Defender Jim Paterson (31) previously played for Dundee United, Motherwell and Plymouth Argyle.

Commenting on the signings, Hoops boss, Michael O’Neill said: “We’re delighted to have added the two players to our squad, especially given the limited time period we had.

“Jim will add great experience having played over 300 games at SPL and Championship level, and can play in a number of positions.

“Rohan is a very exciting option and can add a little bit extra in the final third of the pitch. He has also played first team football at the highest level.”
