Many world boxing experts find it difficult to understand why three times world champion Katie Taylor has not turned professional, having won every World, Irish, European and European Union title available over the past seven years and world number 1 ranked for the past five.
In a rare interview for a non-Irish media organisation she told “Sky Sports News HD”:
“I could have gone professional, got a good deal and made a lot of money”
“But the Olympics has always been my dream and to win an Olympic gold medal is worth more than all the money in the world to me.”
Katie, who has also played international football for Ireland, remains confident that she can make a real impact in boxing.
“I would love to be remembered as a pioneer of women’s boxing,” added the 25-year-old.
“I want to do the best that I can and be one of the biggest names to come out of women’s boxing.”
Should she win in London 2012, one can be sure that the young Wicklow woman will have a queue of international promoters on her doorstep but even then, will she turn Pro? Only time will tell.
