Cavan ‘s John Joe Nevin came from behind with an outstanding final round to qualify for the semi-finals of the Bantamweight division at the World Amateur championships in Baku this morning.Against Orzubek Shaymov of Uzbekistan, the Cavan man simply got better as the fight progressed despite losing the opening frame.
The 22 years old lost round one 4:7, won the second 5:4 so was still 11:9 behind entering the third and final round.In all all action final three minutes Nevin came back again as he had done in yesterday’s last 16 bout. Nevin was on the offensive throughout that final round andt held off a final challenge from his opponent to ease home 19:17.
A delighted Nevin’s immediate reaction – “Come On Ya Boy, Ya!” . In Friday’s semi finals he will meet England’s Luke Cambbell who had a 12:8 win against World champion, Detelin Dalakiev of Bulgaria today. A battle royal on the cards come Friday as Campbell is rated as one of GB Boxing’s best prospects in London 2012.
For Kilkenny’s Darren O’Neill however these championships have come to
an end as he lost to Japan’s Ryota Mulata 18:9 in their quarter final meeting . O’Neill was 2-3 behind at end of round one; 5-7 at end of the second and in a final three minutes, Mulata ‘piled on the agony’ for the Paulstown BC man, the Japanese winning that round 8-2 and the contest 18-9.
