Tourlestrane 1-15 Glencar/Manorhamilton 2-07
Sligo champions Tourlestrane had to come from behind to take a semi-final play in the Connacth Club Football Championship against St Brigids, after defeating a determined Glencar Manorhamilton of Leitrim outfit by five points.
The losing side made the better start to this game and led 0-2 to no score in the early minutes. A Brian Egan free narrowed the gap and got Tourlestrane off the mark for the day. However, Glencar/Manorhamilton soon hit back and had a goal and two points on the board in a matter of minutes. That stretched their lead to four points and they were looking the better team. Gary Gaughan then struck a crucial goal for the eventual winners, helping to drag them back into a match that was in danger of slipping from their grasp. Gerry McGowan added a point and suddenly there was only the minimum between the sides. Both teams then traded points, before a free from Egan just before the break left the scores level at 1-05 apiece at the interval.
Egan was proving a real thorn in the side of Glencar/Manorhamilton, and he scored the opening two points of the second period to leave his men ahead by two. Diarmuid Dunne and McGowan doubled that to four points, and Shane Dunne made it five. The game looked all over at this stage but credit to Glencar/Manorhamilton who fought back and added a second goal to keep the game alive. For a brief period it appeared as if they might mount a fightback, but late points from Egan, James Leonard and John Marren, were enough to see Tourlestrane hold out for a comfortable victory.
Brian Egan was the star player on the day and his fine efforts from both play and placed balls were the difference between the sides at the end of the match.
