Sligo Rovers are through to their third successive FAI Ford cup final after beating Bohemians 1-0 at Dalymount Park.
Jason McGuinness was the Sligo hero as he scored the only goal on 73 minutes to seal Sligo’s spot and break Boh’s hearts for the second year running.
A bumper crowd of almost 3,000 people were treated to an exciting and intriguing encounter as both sides went toe to toe from the off, the opening 45 minutes showing plenty of endeavour without any chances or goals to show for the efforts of the players on show.
Sligo had claims for a penalty waved away early on after a Ger O’Brien handball and had a John Russell effort ruled off for offside with Ollie Cahill’s effort which sailed wide the only response of note from Bohs.
The second half mirrored the first with neither side able to find a breakthrough although Matthew Blinkhorn went close on 70 minutes however Rovers took the lead 3 minutes later when McGuinness controlled Richie Ryan’s cross before slotting the ball home.
Bohs went for bust in the final 15 minutes throwing everything at their visitors as they tried to salvage a replay however in the end Rovers held on and will now meet the winners of Monday night’s replay between St Pat’s and Shelbourne in the final at Aviva Stadium.
