Manchester United are understood to be chasing Borussia Dortmund defender Neven Subotic, as the Red Devils attempt to shore up a defence that has let them down this season.
Sir Alex Ferguson has had Subotic watched previously and according to caughtoffside.com, he is now ready to make an official bid in the January transfer window.
Ferguson has seen his usually reliable defence concede an alarming number of goals this year, most notably the 3-3 draw against FC Basle in the Champions League and yesterday’s 6-1 defeat against Manchester City at Old Trafford.
Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic continue to struggle with injury and Ferguson is keen to strengthen his defence with a commanding centre-half in the shape of Subotic.
The 22-year-old defender is expected to cost in the region of £20m but it appears to be a price United are prepared to pay if it can save their season.
