Both Manchester United and Manchester City won on Wednesday’s night match day four action with contrasting performances. At Old Trafford a makeshift Manchester united team with Wayne Rooney deployed in a midfield role and Michael Owen up front, albeit briefly with injury hampering his night, overcame the stubborn challenge of Otelul Galati. Antonio Valencia’s 8th minute tap in and a late deflected effort from Rooney sealed a less than straight forward win.
Benfica missed the chance to go top of the table as they squandered a 1-0 lead to draw at home to Basel, Rodrigo put the home side ahead after four minutes and despite looking like they might double their advantage, a second failed to come and Basel, who drew 3-3 with United, salvaged a point through Benjamin Huggel to stay in contention in the group.
In group A Yaya Toure scored twice and Mario Balotelli scored a penalty as Manchester City went second in the group and kept on course to qualify to the knock out stages with a 3-0 win over Villarreal in Spain, Bayern Munich top the group on ten points but not before they were made sweat against Napoli.
A Mario Gomez hat trick putting Bayern three up after 42 minutes however two headers from Federico Fernández, the second with 11 minutes to go make for a nervy ending. The German’s held on however to move to the brink of qualification.
Inter Milan took control of Group B as they beat bottom side Lille thanks to goals from Walter Samuel and Diego Milton sealing the three points. Elsewhere in the group, CSKA maintained their loose grasp on second spot with a nil all draw away to Trabzonspor
Finally in Group D, Ajax leapfrogged Lyon to go second in the table after a comfortable four nil home win over Dinamo Zagreb as Real Madrid, thanks to a double from Cristano Ronaldo, the first an excellent free, made it four wins out of four with a 2-0 win over Lyon.
