Athy 1-13 Old Leighlin 1-3
Kildare champions Athy had an easy win over Old Leighlin from Carlow in the Leinster club championship at Newbridge on Sunday afternoon. Athy had ten points to spare at the finish and now march on to the provincial semi finals.
There was little between the sides in the opening half and the Kildare side went in at the break with a slender two point lead, 0-5 to 0-3. Athy stepped it up after the break and led by seven with ten minutes to play. At 0-10 to 0-3, they were able to coast in the closing stages and never looked in any real danger of losing this tie. A late penalty from James Eaton finished off any hope the Carlow side of upsetting the odds and despite a consolation goal, the Carlow men were never in this contest.
Athy were very strong in the second half and outscored their opponents 1-08 to 1-0. Having ended the Moorefield/Sarsfield dominance of the Kildare championship, the new county title holders will be a match for most sides in the province.
