Transfer targets for next Sunderland manager

It’s fair to say that Sunderland’s season hasn’t exactly gone to plan. The Summer transfer window saw eleven new faces arrive at the Stadium of Light which resulted in high hopes not only from the fans but the board. Steve Bruce’s departure is no surprise considering the financial backing the chairman gave him in August but the former United defender had done wonders for the North East club and many will be sad to see him go. Whoever takes over at the Stadium of Light will need to win the passionate fans over quickly and more importantly improve the results.

Of course Steve Bruce would have had his own January targets including the likes of Charles N’Zogbia but the next manager will have his own favourites and style of player who he will want to bring to the club.

Bruce’s successor could well be given cash in January and in order to change the club’s fortunes they need quality players who can make a difference or else they will quickly become embroiled in a relegation scrape. I look at a few possible players that could arrive in the North East during the transfer window.

Albert Riera
Age: 29
Position: Winger
Club: Galatasaray
Nationality: Spanish
Value: €3 million

The former Liverpool and Man City winger has been targeted by the Black Cats as they continue to search for a left winger. He has a deadly left foot but lacks pace and skill. He never really made an impact at Anfield and question marks have been raised about his ability to play in England. The Turkish side will be willing to let him go it seems as they try to rebuild their squad but his €115,000 a week wages could be a problem in trying to secure a deal.

Interesting stat: He has played 16 games for Spain but has scored four goals.

Plays like: James Milner
Chance of signing: 7/10

Roman Pavlyuchenko
Age: 29
Position: Striker
Club: Tottenham
Nationality: Russian
Value: Loan

The Russian striker has been on the fringes at White Hart Lane for a few years now but has failed to secure a move. Tottenham will look to offload him on loan it seems until the summer when they will hope to sign Adebayor. Sunderland desperately need a prolific striker following the sale of Bent, Gyan and Welbeck’s return to Old Trafford. He has come out publicly stating his desire to leave and said that Sunderland were interested during the summer so a deal could very well be done come January, would be a great signing for the Black Cats.

Interesting stat: He scored both Russia’s goals in there 2-1 win over England in Moscow during the Euro 2008 qualifying campaign.

Plays like: Karim Benzema
Chance of signing: 7/10

Loic Remy
Age: 24
Position: Striker
Club: Marseille
Nationality: French
Value: €15 million

Many clubs have been chasing the young striker but he stayed in France during the summer. His hefty transfer fee might deter Sunderland’s pursuit and offers from bigger clubs might just sway him into joining them. Unlikely he will sign for the Black Cats but Sunderland have said he is one of their January targets.

Interesting stat:

Plays like: Thierry Henry
Chance of signing: 5/10

Josh McEachran
Age: 18
Position: Midfield
Club: Chelsea
Nationality: English
Value: Loan

McEachran is looking to go out on loan for the second half of the season and Sunderland need a central midfielder to get on the ball like Jordan Henderson and create chances. Chelsea are willing to let him go out on loan to gain vital experience and seeing how the likes of Sturridge and Welbeck have benefited from loan spells, both parties will benefit.

Interesting stat: He made his senior debut when he was 17 years and 6 months old in a Champions League game.

Plays like: Jack Wilshere
Chance of signing: 8/10

Danijel Pranjic
Age: 29
Position: Midfield
Club: Bayern Munich
Nationality: Croatian
Value: €4.5 million

The versatile Croatian signed for Bayern two years ago but struggled to make an impact at the Allianz Arena. Injuries meant his first team opportunities were limited and has been since relegated to the reserve team. He is looking for a move and Bruce has identified him as a potential signing admitting he is setting his sights on signing the 29 year old. He can play at either left back or in midfield so is a valuable player and would add vital experience to the Black Cats squad.

Interesting stat: He made his international debut against Republic of Ireland in 2004

Plays like: Guti
Chance of signing: 5/10
