Munster 19 -13 Scarlets,12:45pm
Munster are now firmly in control of Pool One of the Heineken Cup, following a 19-13 win over second placed Scarlets, at Thomond Park on Sunday afternoon. Once again, Ronan O’Gara was the man on form for the Irish province as he continued his excellent recent form.
The Irish out half had his side in front after only four minutes when he kicked his first successful penalty of the game.The visitors drew level through Jones after 12 minutes, but another penalty from O’Gara saw Munster retain the lead. That was the final score of the opening half and it ended 6-3 to the hosts.
O’Gara made it 9-3 with his third penalty just after the restart and a try from James Coughlan on 52 minutes effectively sealed the game for the Irish side. O’Gara added the extras and his side led 16-3. Priestland and O’Gara then exchanged penalties to leave it 19-6, before before a late try from Owens and conversion from the aforementioned Priestland left it 19-13. The Irish side had to battle hard in the dying minutes but were never in any serious danger and deserved their success.
Munster’s destiny is now very much in their own hands, and having mae such a promising start to the campaign they should be capable of building on this after the Christmas break and wrapping up this pool.
