High profile sportsman faces assault allegation

South Australian police say they are investigating assault allegations against leading cyclist Stuart O’Grady who is due to compete from Tuesday in the Tour Down Under, first event of the 2012 UCI World Tour.

In a statement Monday, police said they were investigating a complaint made against “a high profile sportsman” and O’Grady called a news conference later to say he was the subject of the allegation which he called “outrageous”.

O’Grady, a winner of three stages on the Tour de France, said he had not yet been spoken to by police, though the allegation related to an incident with a chauffeur which occured on Jan. 10.

The 38-year-old cyclist told reporters “nothing happened, there is no story.”
