UCC and UUJ qualified for the 100th Sigerson Cup final on Saturday afternoon, after victories over UCD and NUI Maynooth respectively in Friday’s semi finals.
The Cork side, who defeated holders DCU on Thursday, beat the hosts, UCD by two points (0-13 to 0-11). Despite falling behind early on 0-3 to 0-0 , they recovered well and went in at the interval leading by 0-8 to 0-5.
UCD narrowed the gap after the restart but UCC had another gear in them when it was required and stepped up in the final minutes to book their place in Saturday’s decider.
UUJ were also two point winners over NUI Maynooth in the second semi final. Although the Ulster side were hot favourites they were made to work very hard by a Maynooth side that surprised Queens and UL in their run to Fridays semi final. As with the other semi, the score at halftime was 0-8 to 0-5. On this occasion UUJ held the three point advantage at the break.
After a strong start to the second half saw UUJ hit five unanswered points, they appeared to have this game won. However, Maynooth fought back well and tried right to the final whistle before having to give best to their opponents.
UUJ will be attempting to win their second Sigerson title in four years on Saturday, while UCC will be hoping to bridge a sixteen year gap since their last title.
