Barrett Sports Dr McKenna Cup Final:
Derry v Tyrone, Athletic Grounds 7.00pm
After the cancellations due to the implement weather and the tragic death of Michaela Harte, the Dr McKenna Cup Final will eventually be decided on Saturday evening as Derry and Tyrone do battle for the title.
If this game had been played two weeks ago, Derry would have been overwhelming favourites for victory. John Brennan’s side looked very impressive in their opening league encounters, while Tyrone were pointless and in danger of relegation. However, the fortunes of the respective teams have changed remarkably in the intervening period, with the Oaf Leaf county being well beaten at home to Laois, while Tyrone picked up their first points of the season away to Sligo.
Saturday’s clash could be a turning point in each sides season, with Derry hoping to get back to winning ways and Tyrone anxious to add to their recent improvement in fortunes. The red hands went through the entire McKenna Cup unbeaten and will hope to retain that impressive record this weekend.
Derry had looked like a side to follow in 2011 when they came away from Newbridge with full points in round two and it was somewhat of a surprise that they could not put up a better showing against Laois last weekend. Tyrone were poor against Donegal in round two and apart from the Sligo game, have still looked a pale shadow of former times.
In a game that could go either way, Derry may just have that little bit of extra fitness at this stage of the season and are taken to claim the honours here.
