That amateur boxing is flourishing in Ireland , and not just at club level, was re-confirmed when the IATBA held its annual championships at Dublin’s National Stadium. Among the new champions is Martin Wall who only a few weeks earlier had shocked followers of the sport when defeating European champion, Ray Moylette, in the Irish Elite seniors
The Irish Amateur Third-Level Boxing Association (IATBA) was founded in 2010 by a group of boxing enthusiasts from third-level institutions around Ireland. It was tasked with the promotion and development of boxing, Ireland’s most successful Olympic sport, within Ireland’s higher education institutions. It is the only university boxing organization in Ireland recognized by the Colleges and Universities Sports Association of Ireland (CUSAI).
Here thanks to iaba.ie and also to IATBA Chairman Paddy Gallagher is a report on this year’s championships with full results:
Jamie Griffin and Michael Murphy had to be separated on a double countback .
A see-saw light-middleweight clash went all the way back to the judges with Murphy having his hand raised in triumph.
Meanwhile, Martin Wall emerged with the welterweight title following a cracking final with Ryan Harkin in the 69Kg Senior class.
James McDowell, Mark Kearney, Eamon Walsh and Phelim Halligan also claimed victories at the home of Irish boxing.
UCC and Cork IT secured six titles, three each, from the Intermediate and Novice finals. Cork IT team-mates Conor Buckley and Liam O’Tuairsig contested the 85Kg final, Buckley earning an 11-5 decision.
