The drawing of lots for the Gymnastics competitions at the London 2012 Olympic Games was conducted at FIG headquarters in Lausanne at the weekend.
The draw was attended by FIG President Bruno Grandi and the FIG Technical Presidents representing the federation’s Olympic disciplines.
Gymnastics will be represented at the London 2012 Olympic Games by a total of 324 athletes comprising 98×2 for Artistic, 96 for Rhythmic and 16×2 for Trampoline Gymnastics.
For enthusiasts of Irish gymnastics what mattered most would be how Kieran Behan fared in that draw and truth to tell it was not a bad draw for the Croydon-based athlete.
He is in Mixed Group three with the representatives of Armenia, Argentina and Latvia in front of him and after him will come Egypt and Slovakia.
As Gymnastic Ireland says :“ What a month it (January) has been for the 22-year-old Artistic male gymnast Kieran Behan.
Not only did he qualify for Ireland at the 2012 London Olympic games, but he landed 4th place in Floor final at the London Prepares Test Event (the final Olympic qualification), he has received funding from the Olympic Council of Ireland and has gained access to the Irish Sports Council’s High Performance funding programme, not to mention capturing the attention of Ireland’s media and beyond. The inspirational 22-year-old captured Ireland’s heart with his journey to gaining Olympic qualifications. He featured on Ireland’s The Late Late show, has been interviewed on nearly every radio station across the
country and landed front page of The Irish Times.”
Now though the really hard work begins for Kieran and his coach, Tolworth’s Simon Gale who is also Irish team coach
