Robin Van Persie suffered a groin injury in training on Tuesday with the Netherlands at Wembley ahead of their friendly with England tonight.
Van Persie was unable to complete the full 60 minute session and had to sit out the final part of the session after aggravating a groin injury suffered in Arsenal’s 5-2 league win over Tottenham on Sunday.
Arsenal released Van Persie for international duty this week because they considered his injury to be minor. Dutch national team coach Bert van Marjik said he was optimistic that talisman Van Persie would play: “We will have to wait and see but I don’t think it’s too serious. I am optimistic he will play.”
Should Van Persie miss tonight’s game, he will be replaced by Klaus Jan Huntelaar. Marc Van Bommell is also a doubt.
The two sides have experienced contrasting fortunes in the lead-up to Euro 2012, with the Dutch winning nine of their 10 qualifiers. England had a more turbulent qualifying and are now without a full-time head coach after Fabio Capello stepped down recently. Interim head coach Pearce has seen five players – Wayne Rooney, Tom Cleverley, Kyle Walker, Glen Johnson and Darren Bent – pull out of today’s game. Kick-off at Wembley is 7:45pm.
