Ireland scored a comprehensive 12-0 win over Ukraine in Sunday afternoon’s ‘Electric Ireland FIH Road to London’ Olympic qualifier at U.C.D’s Belfield arena and now look forward with not a little confidence to meeting top seeds Korea on Tuesday at the same venue (6pm).
Remembering the situation in 2008 when Ireland failed to qualify from the New Zealand qualifier (by a single goal) goals are vitally important this week so today’s twelve goals will do no harm to the Green Machine’s qualification chances.
On Saturday they had defeated Russia 6-1 after a slow start and it was a pretty cagey opening ten minutes from Paul Revington’s side also, against the tournament’s weakest side. Timmy Cockram though eased Irish nerves with the opener after 14 minutes.
As early as the 26th minute – after two goals from former Down hurler , Eugene Magee – Ireland were well on the road to their big win.
The visitors never looked like scoring. So a comprehensive win for the Irish side and six points taken from their opening two games but the hardest games are yet to come starting with the Korean game on Tuesday ,followed by another crucial Pool A game against the Malaysians on St Patrick’s Day.
