Mayo man named reserve linesman for Euro 2012

Mayo secondary school teacher Damian MacGraith has been named by UEFA as reserve assistant referee for the upcoming European Championships in Poland and Ukraine.

The man who teaches at Scoil Mhuire Secondary School in his native Mayo has refereed at UEFA’s highest under age level having been an assistant referee at the final of the Under-21 European Championships in Copenhagen last year.

The 32 year-old starting refereeing the Mayo Schoolboys league and working his way up from there to Elite Level in 2005. He has been an assistant referee at the 2006 FAI League Cup Final, the 2007 and 2010 FAI Cup Finals and the 2011 Setanta Sports Cup Final.

Ireland’s only Elite Level referee;  Cork’s Alan Kelly was on the shortlist of referees for Euro 2012 but the 36 year-old, who refereed in the Champions League Group stages at Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernebeau this season is reported to have  “narrowly missed out”  on the tournament itself.
