This Sunday March 25th at 3pm sees the 43rd running of the Dunboyne 4 Mile Road Race and & Fun Run, this year kindly sponsored by EirGrid
The EirGrid Dunboyne 4 Mile Road Race & Fun Run is ‘a short race with a big reputation’ and a landmark event on the Irish road racing calendar.
2010 winner Joseph Sweeney (Dundrum South Dublin AC) is returning to the roads of Dunboyne and will be the hot favorite to win the 2012 event. Sweeney had an outstanding winter season culminating in a fifth place finish in the European Cross Country Championships back in December.
Among the challengers to Sweeney will be the exciting middle distance talent Paul Robinson (St. Cocoa’s AC). Robinson has recently returned from an extended training stint in Australia, which saw Robinson record a 1500m personal best of 3:40:50. In this sort of form, Sweeney will need to be at his absolute best to hold off track specialist Robinson. Other athletes to watch out for include Darren McBrearty (Letterkenny AC) and local athlete Dara Rennicks (Bohermeen AC).
There are cash prizes of €400 for the first man and woman home, and a €250 bonus for anyone who breaks the men’s (18.09) and women’s (20.00) course records, currently held by Glynn Thomas (Coventry Godiva Harriers) and Rosemary Ryan (Bilboa AC).
Open to walkers, joggers and runners all of ages and standards, the flat and fast course – beginning and ending in Dunboyne town centre – offers all participants an excellent chance of achieving personal bests.
At four miles, this is also an ideal event for anyone new to fitness walking or running as the emphasis is on mass participation and a fun day out in a friendly and safe environment.
The day’s programme includes boys’ and girls’ races in the under-12 and under-15 categories. Entry for these events is just €2 and every finisher will receive a souvenir medal.
There will also be a Little Athletics ‘Agility Challenge’ event in Dunboyne town green for children aged 5-10.
Online entry (€15) is still available up to midnight Friday at www.dunboynerun.com and on the day at the event (€20).
