Arsene Wenger is reportedly on a two-man shortlist to replace his old foe Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid.
The French manager is under increasing pressure from the Arsenal home faithful after disappointing results recently, including a run of three successive defeats and the Real Madrid hierarchy are reportedly ready to pounce for their long time target.
Wenger joins Germany manager Joachim Low on the shortlist as Mourinho’s grip on his job seems to be waning somewhat after being knocked out of the Copa del Rey by Barcelona, despite being five points ahead of the Catalans in the league table.
Speculation mounted over Mourinho’s future at the Bernabeu when a player or member of staff leaked a highly detailed conversation between Mourinho and his players to Madrid paper Marca, in which Jose criticised his players and they had a few choice words to say back to their manager.
The two-time European Cup winner added fuel to the rumours when he said on Tuesday, “I don’t know if I’ll be at Real Madrid next season.”
Mourinho’s untenable position coupled with Wenger’s relationship with Arsenal fans breaking down after he substituted exciting prospect Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in his sides’ 2-1 defeat to Man United, could spell the end for both managers at their respective clubs.
