Camogie – Ashbourne Cup Colleges Quarter Finals preview

No Inter County games this week but much to look forward to in the weeks ahead, so let us not forget the Ashbourne Cup , for Colleges and Universities .

The quarter-finals are pencilled in for next week. Ashbourne Cup holders WIT will be hoping to make it three in a row titles this year with victories over UCD and UCC in 2009 and 2010 respectively. To begin their challenge WIT will travel to this year’s hosts NUI Galway. Under

the stewardship of former star player and current Wexford All Ireland medallist Ursula Jacob, WIT will be hoping to make their own bit of history and become the first team in the college to win three Ashbourne Cup’s in a row. NUIG, as Ashbourne hosts, will want to put on a performance for their home

supporters but this match could prove a step too far. The Waterford college are like an inter- county team and have superb players including 2010 All Stars – Kilkenny Captain Anne Dalton and Katrina Parrock from the

University of Ulster Jordanstown will have a tough encounter against University Limerick to try and negotiate their way into the Cup semi-finals. This is a game that could go either way UUJ will fancy their chances and
with players such as Sara Louise Carr, Maebh McGoldrick and Michaela Convery will prove a hard team to stop.

In the remaining match UCC will have home advantage to bitter rivals CIT. CIT will not need any motivation going into this match, coached by former player Charlotte Kearney and with players such as Denise Luby and Erin Corkery (Cork) they could cause an upset. UCC, backboned by Cork captain Orla Cotter and the Mackey twins, will be hoping to be too strong for their opponents, with a view to setting up a repeat of last year’s semi final against UCD who are already through to the Ashbourne Cup with a comprehensive victory over
Athlone IT. The winners of each quarter-final will go through to the Ashbourne Cup semi-finals while the losers will enter the Ashbourne Shield semis-finals, both of which will be held in NUI Galway on February 19th. The
final will be at the same venue on February 20th.
