Cavan Hold On To Deny Monaghan

Cavan 1-13 Monaghan 1-12

Cavan just held on for a narrow victory against Monaghan in this McKenna Cup clash in Inniskeen last night. The two points they picked up could yet prove crucial as it may be enough to see them through to the semi-finals.

Cavan started the better and looked like they would win comfortably. They held a four-point lead after seven minutes with points by Keith Fannin, Michael Brennan, Thomas Corr and Eoin Smith.

Monaghan got on the board in the 10th minute through Ronan Meegan. Cavan could then have opened up a substantial lead when they were awarded a penalty for a foul on Michael Brennan, but Mark Keogh saved the penalty from Brennan.

Cavan went on to lead at half-time by 1-9 to 0-4, Brennan getting the goal just on the half hour, making up for his earlier miss.

In the second half Monaghan were a different side. They took over in midfield and whittled Cavan’s lead away with an unanswered goal and five points to level the game for the first time. Gavin Flanagan got the goal in the ninth minute of the half.

That was as close as they could get though. Cavan regained the lead and held on until the whistle although Monaghan missed a late penalty.
