Denman will be in top shape come Lexus: Nicholls

Paul Nicholls has promised that Denman will be fit as Kauto Star was on Betfair Chase day when his Gold Cup winner makes his belated seasonal debut in the Lexus Chase at Leopardstown over Christmas.

Denman, who finished behind Long Run in the Cheltenham Gold Cup, was last seen when he was well beaten by Nacarat at Aintree in April. However Nicholls believes that racegoers will see a different Denman when he lines up at Leopardstown.

“”We were always going go to the Lexus and then on to the Gold Cup,” he said. “He’s coming along well. You don’t know until they run but the aim is to gethim as fit as Kauto was for the Betfair. We are not going to leave any stone unturned. He’s already had one racecourse gallop, will probably have another and we are very happy with him.

“Denman ran really well in the Gold Cup and you can forget his last run like you can forget Kauto’s at Punchestown. If he runs like he did in the Gold Cup he would be in with a big shout. It’s the Lexus and the Gold Cup for him.”
