Derval O’Rourke impresses in Vienna

Derval O’Rourke (Leevale AC) made an impressive start to her indoor Season running 8.16 at the Indoor Classic Meet in Vienna last night, one of her fastest season openers in recent years.

She finished second to Yvette Lewis of USA who won in 8.11 The Cork woman will continue to compete in the indoor circuit. The former World Indoor champion is pre-selected by Athletic s Ireland for the World Indoor Track and Field Championships which take place in Istanbul on the 9th-11th March.

Also in action last night was Claire Bergin (Dundrum South Dublin), a member of the women’s Irish 4x400m team who are bidding for Olympic qualification. Bergin produced a personal best double in the 200m of 24.50 and 400m of 54.57, to finish second and fourth respectively.

Our middle distance women also produced some fine performances, Orla Drumm (UCC) ran 4.18.61 to finish second in the Women’s 1500m improving her indoor best of 4.19.01., whilst Sara Louise Treacy (Moynalvey-Kilcloone AC) finished fifth in the same race, setting a personal best of 4.21.91.

Olympian Paul Hession (Athenry AC) also started his season at the weekend after a stint of heavy training in South Africa. Running in the 60m at the London Indoor Games at Lee Valley he ran 6.95.

Ciaran O’Lionaird (Leevale AC) will take to the track for his first indoor race this weekend when he competes in the Men’s Mile in the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix on Saturday 4th February. He will line up against Britain’s Mo Farah and Galen Rupp of USA. Farah is one of the favourites to complete a 5000m/10000m double gold in London 2012.
