The 27 year old qualifier had a superb round of 66 yesterday to open a three shot lead over tournament favourite Tiger Woods and Northern Irelands Graham McDowell. G-Mac who won the tournament in 2010 had an excellent round of 69 yesterday to leave him one under par after day one. He is joined there by Americans David Toms and Nick Watney and England’s Justin Rose

Thompson who’s best previous finish in the U.S. Open was in a tie for 60th at Torrey Pines in 2008 said he is happy for all the spot light to still be on the other players in the tournament, he said “Give Tiger the spotlight, I don’t care. I’m going to go out and play my game. If I go out and putt the way I did today, I’ll be in contention.

“Obviously my name’s in the spotlight, but a lot of people don’t know who I am. I’m totally okay with that because I’ve always been a player that just kind of hangs around. I don’t give up very easily and I’m very proud of that.”

Mean while the rest of the Irish are not going as well as hoped. Rory McIlroy had a disastrous round of 77 to leave him 7 over par, while Padraig Harrington and Peter Lawrie both had rounds of 74 to leave hem 4 over par. Mcilroy will have to have a much better second round if he is to avoid yet another cut. He has only made 1 in the last of his 4 tournaments.
