Gillian Callaghan claims first winner on the track

County Meath trainer Gillian Callaghan claimed her first winner under rules when Mount Benbulben won the bumper at Thurles on Thursday afternoon.

The well-backed 5/2 second favourite, a point-to-point winner at Tinehely last month, quickened clear under Andy Duff over a furlong out and stayed on to beat evens favourite Mozoltov by seven lengths.

Mrs Callaghan, whose husband Barry is Gordon Elliott’s landlord at Capranny, trains a team of six just across the road from Elliott. Callaghan is a former Meath footballer who won an All Ireland title with the county as a full forward.

Gillian Callaghan only took out a licence in November, and her brother Greg Harford was a well-known amateur rider in his time.
