James Stephens 1-8 Ballyhale Shamrocks 0-11
Henry Shefflin was once again his sides hero yesterday afternoon, hitting a free four minutes into injury-time to give Ballyhale Shamrocks a draw with James Stephens in the Kilkenny Senior Hurling Championship final at Nowlan Park.
Shefflin tied the contest and sent it to a replay after Colin Fennelly was fouled in the final minutes. Stephens looked set to record a famous victory when Eoin Larkin gave them the lead just on full-time, but his county team-mate hit back for Shamrocks.
Shamrocks were the better side in the opening period, and led by TJ Reid, they established a 0-8 to 0-4 half-time lead.
Stephens fought back after the restart and took the lead in the 55th minute when Eoin Larkin set up David Walton to score the only goal of the match.
Shamrocks failed to score from play in the second half, but drew level in the 58th minute with a ’65 from Shefflin. However, Larkin soon had Stephens back in front again. The game looked up for Ballyhale, but not for the first time in his career, Shefflin proved to be the hero as he salvaged the draw.
