One of Ireland’s most experienced sailors, David Burrows together with Peter O’Leary moved into third place overall on the opening day of the ‘Star’ event at the World Championships in Perth. They gained an eight and a second placing and were but 14 seconds behind the winner in that second race.
“Great Britain”s Iain Percy and Andrew Simpson lead with Robert Stanjek and Frithjof Kleen (GER) second and in third place Peter O’Leary and David Burrows (IRE).
Burrows is one of Ireland’s most experienced Olympic athletes. If selected, his will be his fourth Olympics having previously represented Ireland in 1996 in Atlanta in the Star class and in Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004 in the single handed Finn Class.
Peter O’Leary represented Ireland at the Beijing Olympics 2008 in the Star Class. He won a gold medal at the Sail for Gold 2010 regatta in Weymouth and the Eastern Hemisphere Champions 2009, both in the Star”
Racing continues until the Medal Race on Sunday 18 December 2011. Competition starts on Monday for Ryan Seaton and Matt McGovern in the 49er class and James Espey in the Laser class.
