Ruby Walsh has admitted that he would be “happy enough” to ride either Kauto Star or Master Minded in the King George VI Chase at Kempton on December 26.
The Kildare born rider has won four King Georges on Kauto Star, but despite his impressive reappearance at Haydock, he has yet to be confirmed a certain runner at Christmas.
Kauto Star and Master Minded are both owned by Clive Smith and trained by Paul Nicholls. The latter has impressed since stepping up to 2m 4f but has yet to race over 3miles.
Speaking on The Morning Line, Walsh said: “I don’t mind, once I’m still fit and healthy on December 26 I’ll be happy enough to ride either.”
Asked if he would desert Kauto Star, who has also won two Cheltenham Gold Cups, Walsh added: “There’ll come a day I’ll have to.”
Reflecting on the Betfair Chase, Walsh added: “He jumped super all the way – he put the others to the sword you could say. He was in good nick – mentally he was in great shape and pretty alert.
“You have to enjoy riding these horses and he proved he’s still a wonderful horse.”
