Taylor faces ‘old’ adversary Dilhofova

Katie Taylor will meet , the tough Czech Republic No 1, Danuse Dilhofova in the quarter-finals of the Strandja Multi-Nations in Pazardjik, Bulgaria today. This the 82nd holding of the tournament is the first to feature women.
Ireland’s only other entry , Sinead Kavanagh from the Drimnagh club, has received a bye into the middleweight semi-finals where her opponent will be Tamara Garcia of Spain tomorrow ( Friday).
The 25years old Garcia had been the first Spanish female to win a major international contest when she won the Cote D’Opale tournament defeating two-time World Champion Hungarian Maria Kovacs 8-6 in a hectic final bout,so a tough opponent for Kavanagh.
Taylor, the current World, European and European Union lightweight champion, beat Dilhofova in the quarter-finals of the European Union Championships in Hungary in 2010 after Dilhofova was disqualified for unsporting conduct in the third round. Taylor was 4-1 up.
The Bray woman had also beaten Dilhofova (4-3) at the AIBA World Championships in Ningbo City, China in 2008. Though the Irish Elite women’s finals take place this weekend at the National Stadium, Taylor had already received a walk over in the 60kg event so will be able to concentrate on the Bulgarian event instead.

The Strandja Multi-Nations are featuring the three women’s Olympic weight categories; flyweight, lightweight and middleweight. In all ,150 athletes from 22 nations, are expected at the Strandja Tournament. There are no Irish entrants in the men’s event since they clash with the IABA Senior Elite Championships.
