The ISAF World Sailing Championships came to a closein Perth with a
number of medal races including the 49er class. Irish duo Matt
McGovern and Ryan Seaton finished eighth in the race which places them
in 10th position overall in the event – a personal best
Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen (AUS) have confirmed their world
number one ranking in the 49er skiff fleet, winning the gold medal.
Peter Burling and Tuke Blair (NZL) took the silver while the bronze
went to Denmark’s Toft Nielsen brothers, Emil and Simon.
‘A very strong start to the Olympic campaign for the Irish team’
stated James O’Callaghan, ISA Performance Director. ‘We achieved our
target of qualifying three classes at this event and the three
campaigns finished in the top 12. Annalise Murphy in the Laser Radial
in 6th, Ryan Seaton and Matt McGovern in the 49er in 10th and Peter
O’Leary and David Burrows in the Star in 12th. ‘
Yes,some fine performances from the Irish squad in Perth, none more so
than Annalise Murphy’s 6th place in the Laser Radials. She was
understandably disappointed that her 30th place in the opening race
was to eventually stop her from gaining a place on the podium but with
the experience gained , she will without doubt become one of Ireland’s
top hopes for a medal in Weymouth and Portland come Olympic time.
